Amtrak Station on the southern end of Queen City Avenue on Tuscaloosa's Southside Nov. 12, 2002 |
I took this shot just because I was sitting there: a freight train had stopped, blocking both the Hargrove Road (pictured) and Greensboro Avenue intersections. This is not an uncommon occurrence, however, as the Amtrak Station and Norfolk-Southern switching yard are side-by-side. AL 215 (as Greensboro Avenue) parallels the I-359 spur in this area, so there is an alternative route for through traffic. The rail station is located at the 4-mile marker on 215. On the far side of the track one can see Pearson Lumber Company. In line waiting for the tracks to clear is a Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Dept. SUV. The station isn't much to see (especially in comparison with stationhouses which have been restored) and the one attraction at the swithcing yard, other than empty boxcars, was the "--- days since last accident" sign.. The sign went out of use in the late 1990s, I believe, and has since been taken down. It featured the NS mustang reared on its hind legs. For trainspotters, three black NS engines were pushing this line: 6105, 3548 and 7006. |
