Here is a glimpse of some of the exciting topics students will be learning about in fifth grade. LANGUAGE ARTS Students will enjoy a variety of genres this year with our new reading program. Book reports will be assigned throughout the year, which will be posted on the website. MATHEMATICS Fifth-graders will continue their learning of mathematical concepts and skills through the Trailblazers curriculum. They will explore fractions, division, geometry, data collection, problem solving, multiplication, decimals, and more, while employing a variety of solution strategies. Timed math fact tests will be given each week on Friday. Children should be practicing at home with fact triangles or flashcards. WRITING The elements of the writing process will be reinforced through the 5-paragraph essay. Students will write compare/contrast and persuasive essays. They will create written summaries of short stories. Various forms of poetry will be introduced. Fictional stories will be created based on real life-lessons. SOCIAL STUDIES Students will journey through American history! Some of the fascinating topics include the Native Americans, Explorers, the American Revolution, and the Constitution. SCIENCE Areas to explore in science include Ecosystems, Animals, Weather, and Simple Machines. Hands-on experiments and Internet research will bring the study of science to life! |
