My Late Wives (1946)

Blurb:

My review:

There is much entertainment to be found in this late (1946) H.M. story, in which the ageing reprobate, here playing golf under the tutelage of a stage Scotsman, is blackmailed by Chief Insp. Masters into investigating the murderous Roger Bewlay, who managed to make his wives disappear without trace, and his subsequent reappearance in a Suffolk seaside hamlet (perhaps modelled on M.R. James' "O Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad"), where he is forced into action by an actor who impersonates the psychopath (unless, of course, Bruce Ransom is Roger Bewlay). Plenty of tension, including an excellent scene where the hero attempts to dispose of a corpse, builds to an exciting climax in the abandoned house where H.M. unmasks the surprising villain.
