The Wench is Dead (1989)

My review:
A reasonably clever reworking of The Daughter of Time, with an ingenious solution—if not totally unexpected. Morse’s love of crosswords pays off, and his research into documents is interesting. The hospital atmosphere and Morse’s illness do rather intrude, however, and there is too much emphasis on his sexual fantasies and bodily functions. The characters in the past do not come to life, and remain jigsaw pieces; and the book never escapes the shadow of Josephine Tey.
