The Remorseful Day (1999)
Blurb:
My review:
Drab Dexter, over-given to literary allusions and notes on orthography. Too much of the plot is concerned with who is hopping into whose bed—this provides the motive. The reader is never sufficiently interested in the plot to take much interest in the killer, beyond anxiously wondering whether Morse did it. Morse ceases to function at the end of the book, having become a hero.
Why
didn’t Morse
have a decent send-off? Something with
the ingenuity of Service of All the Dead or
The Riddle of the Third Mile, for
instance?
