Sky High! (1955)

Blurb:

My review:

Although often dismissed as a village cosy, this is as exciting and well plotted as the rest of his books.  The murder method is particularly exciting and ingenious: Major Macmorris and his house are blown up by a bomb, and what was suspected from the first becomes clear: the Major’s military past was false (rather risky in a village where every character has an Army background), and he was really an out-of-work actor named Don Trefusis, nursing a gimmick—i.e., blackmailing someone.  Owing to the very small list of suspects, the reader should be able to guess the identity of the murderous victim without great difficulty.  After a fair bit of detection, dealings with the unpleasant Inspector Luck, a chase through a London restaurant concealing a big time fencing organisation, attempted murder and a trip to the seaside with unfortunate results, the murderer’s identity is revealed in a nearly explosive climax.
