BASEMENTS : Basements are where our negative feelings reside. So if
your dream involves a basement try to think of negative and resentful thoughts
that have particularly featured in your thoughts recently. It may suggest
that you are bitter about something, that you have been bottling things up
or simply sensitive about something. It may simply be that you have been accused
of being negative.
KEY WORDS(Pick a quote which captures your feelings right now. Think especially
of the day before the dream) :
- "bottling up feelings"
- "objections"
- "negative and resentful thoughts"
- "he is sensitive about it!"
- "Am I hiding some deeply negative feelings inside me?"
- "Do they really dislike each other?"

DREAM STUDIES : Dreams about basements
--------------------------- -----------------------
THE DREAM I had these metal parts. Everywhere. My head, my arms, my
legs. Just metal and cogs and wires. I was in a doctor's basement office and
I thought I was an experiment of his. I could remember being human. I wondered
how I got to be inside this metal body. I looked down and my foot was missing.
I looked over behind a desk and there it was. I said 'come here' and it hopped
over to me. I set my ankle down inside it and it clicked. I walked across
the room. My feet were really big and heavy and I figured that was to counterbalance
my heavy mechanical parts. I wanted to escape from the metal body and the
doctor's basement. And suddenly I was outside in a parking lot and I was human
again. But still not myself.
I had a British accent(it sounded very much like Kate Winslet. I remember
wondering why I had Kate Winslet's voice. I mean she is a beautiful, talented,
articulate woman but she's not me and I'm not her. Yet I had her voice.
Someone handed me a bag of clothes. I opened them up to find a very granny
like nightgown and dress. I asked if these were for the Amish and whoever
it was that handed them to me said that they were for me and to keep my voice
down. I shoved the clothes back into the bag and said no thanks. Then I woke
up.
THE REALITY The dreamer was in a troubled marriage. She had been accused of
being frigid by her husband and it was maybe true as she had lost all feelings
towards him. The previous week they had had a show down and she stood up to
him. Things are still automatic and numb.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "My husband accused me of being frigid. I have been thinking about
that and I know deep down that any sexual problems are caused by him. I do
not know if its a healthy relationship. I do not know if its worth trying
again. The marriage seems to stop and start."
THE INTERPRETATION The dreamer did feel as if things had become rather mechanical
in her marriage. She felt that her marriage was stuck in a rut. The marriage
just plods on - but its not really going anywhere.
The dream shows her being assertive. This mirrors real life in which she stood
up to her husband. She was not willing to accept what he said about her being
frigid in bed. So thats why she throws back the matronly clothes and says
no thanks. She understands that on the surface that may be true but its only
because of the problems with the relationship.
Doctors are often symbols of us asking ourselves intrusive and challenging
questions. We give ourselves an honest and thorough examination. A doctor
is thorough so these are often dreams about reflection. As we have time to
think we look more objectively and honestly at our situation.
Basements too are quite predictable symbols. They link to issues over which
we have bottled up our fears. They are hidden and bad feelings. They are about
us understanding our own negative sides. So in this case the dreamer is exploring
what negative feelings she has and trying to understand her own situation.
Symbolic Meanings
AMISH : "associates with frigity and not enjoying sex"
BASEMENT : "strong negative feelings - repressed sexuality "
CLOTHES : "how others see us"
DOCTOR : "asking yourself some honest questions"
MECHANICAL : "just going through the motions - not really meaning it"
OFFICE : "organise your thoughts - thinking through what her husband said"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : A simple dream interpretation would say that because a
basement appears in a dream it means that you are negative right now. Thats
a false interpretation. Dreams can deal with your feelings but may equally
deal with someone elses. You maybe worried about someone else. Dreams use
dream symbols in rich and varied ways. Obviously basements link with negative
feelings but think of real life and how the word negativity can be used -
"I am feeling depressed right now", "I am trying to be more
cheerful at work","I had a lot of bad feelings after my argument
yesterday", or "Do my sons have such bad feelings for each other".
All of these issues deal with the theme of negativity. So look for complex
meanings within your dreams.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE DREAM This dream was very powerful and real to me. I was exploring
a huge, old house. Opening doors, wandering hallways, etc. I remember going
down a very narrow stairway into the basement. The basement room was filled
with antique laundry machines etc. I also noticed that I would float, close
to the ground from one object to another. I remember it being cold, dark and
raining outside. At one point I looked out the window, and I saw a man hovered
over, gardening in the rain. A beautiful dressed little girl was standing
beside him. She looked up at me, and then ran away.
THE REALITY The dreamer is an artist. The day before the dream she had an
uncomfortable interaction with someone who was upset because of work that
was not done(misunderstanding). So the dreamer had to set about painting a
picture for someone whom she was upset with. The customer was also equally
upset with her.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "One of my clients got angry because I did not deliver my painting
on time. But it was a misunderstanding. Now I have to set about creating a
work of art whilst I am totally unhappy"
THE INTERPRETATION Basements are usually fairly reliable symbols as they link
to issues regarding negative feelings. So its easy to spot the issue involved
as you just look at what your negative feelings are and the dream will usually
be linked to that. That is the case with one exception. If the basement is
huge then the dream maybe about someone else's negative feelings and the wish
not to annoy them. In this case both cases were true. The dreamer was a little
annoyed at being blamed for the mix up over a painting. The customer was offended
too. The dream seems certainly about this issue. Its just a matter of exploring
the symbolism.
Gardening is a symbol often linked to personal development. Its about new
ideas and relationships that are helping you to grow as a person. But maybe
the garden is a slightly unusual usage of the symbol in this case. Gardens
are about our personal development and the things that are inspiring us. But
the dreamer is an artist. ,That involves a constant need for new creativity
and new energy. So maybe the gardening in the rain symbolises her own frustration
at having to be creative for a client she is annoyed with and for which she
is going to get little thanks in return. Art is a difficult process but having
to be creative whilst in a bad mood is not easy.
Little girls are often symbolic of happy and contented emotions. In this dream
she runs away symbolizing how such happiness and contentment has disappeared.
Symbolic Meanings
BASEMENT : "the dreamers bad feelings generated by the client"
COLD : "Unable to get things done - unable to build up any momentum for
the painting"
GARDENING IN RAIN : "having to be creative whilst annoyed at the customer"
HALLWAYS : "something is in transition - the situation is halfway through
and your feelings are likely to change"
LAUNDRY : "trying to clean up your image to the outside world"
MAN : "compulsion - having to meet a deadline for the painting"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : Dreams deal with current themes in your life. Basements
are useful symbols in that they are easy to trace. They link to negative feelings
and also with the fear of offending people. So it makes life simple - simply
look for such issues that deal with negativity and resentment within your
waking life. Look for negativity and resentment at work. Look for it in difficult
relationships and within yourself.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE DREAM I had just got a new job in a town near my home town, I can
remember feeling nervous about going there, the job was in a shoe shop, I
went into the shop and was told to go downstairs into the basement where all
the shoes were kept, I got down there and there was thousands of boxes and
there was a little river, some of the boxes were floating down the river,
I cant really describe this next part, but the river kind of joined onto another
river, kind of like a sewer. I don't know why, but as soon as I saw the boxes
floating down the river, I instantly knew I was never going to leave that
place, I was going to die there, I was terrified but the next thing I knew
I had been sent over to some kind of office for something, and I saw a girl
I used to go to school with, she told me it was good to see me and that we
should get together for a night out, then I saw another girl I went to school
with and she basically said the same thing and all I can remember thinking
is 'well I cant do anything with my old friends, because I'm going to be dead'.
THE REALITY The dreamer has a project going at the minute. But she feels like
she is the only one putting any time and effort into it. She was starting
to wonder why she should bother. She also feels that her family have no faith
in her and think her project is stupid. But the project means a lot to her
and she wishes to succeed with or without their support.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "This project is important to me. But I feel like I am getting no support"
THE INTERPRETATION Basements are one of the most reliable symbols in dreams.
They will link to some form of bad feelings. So simply think of the most important
source of bad feeling in your life at the moment. In this case the dreamer
had an obvious source of bad feelings. She was trying to push a project but
was not getting support.
Shoes in dreams are a symbol of direction. In this case the dreamer had a
clear idea about what she wanted to achieve and was enthusiastic in the energy
she was devoting to this.
This dream takes place in a shoe shop and shops are symbols of the opportunities
and options we have. But here the dreamer is doing the selling. Selling is
perhaps symbolic of her wish to convince(sell) her thoughts about the project
she was involved in. Yet she was not getting any support.
Rivers are strong symbols in dreams. The symbolise the energy devoted and
momentum of some project. Perhaps the small stream symbolises the lack of
support she was getting. In turn this turns into a sewer which cannot be a
very positive symbol.
Symbolic Meanings
BASEMENT : "the dreamers is building up a sense of resentment because
of a lack of support"
FRIEND : "your ideal situation - something you feel positive about"
OFFICE : "organising your own thoughts - a moment of reflection"
RIVER : "the lack of momentum in her project and lack of support"
SELL(working in shop) : "trying to convince the people around her"
SEWER : "the dreamers energy is now been diverted into the lack of support"
SHOE : "a symbol of direction and purpose "
SHOP : "The dreamers own options"

DREAM TIP : During the day we store everything that happens in short
term memory. Then at night we work through these new feelings. At the same
time we reshape our emotions and integrate these new feelings into long term
memory banks. Finally we clear short term memory banks ready to start the
whole process again. This is very important to understand dreams. They represent
the ways in which our feelings have been reshaped by the previous day.

THE DREAM I was in this mansion. I thought it was mine. There were
lots of people inside. Many of which I had never seen before. They were many
different ages, but a lot of young people my age. Some of them reminded me
of people I meet in wal-mart.
The basement of this mansion was scheduled to be destroyed. There was a contract
worker setting up the explosive device. There was a protective door shielding
the basement from the rest of the house for when the explosion happened. Everyone
was leaving the basement for the 1st floor. I had to help make sure everyone
was out. I remember getting babies and handing them to people on the 1st floor
to look after. Then me and this other guy ran through the basement calling
out to make sure no one was left. Time on the explosive was running out at
this point. We climbed up a long shaft to leave the basement, Then We locked
the blast door behind us.
In the 1st floor waiting room were a lot of young people - especially young
cute guys and pretty girls. I sat next to one of the guys for a while but
then he disappeared and I didn't much like the other guys so I went and sat
with the girls. One guy came up to me and asked if I liked one of the other
guys he thought I was looking at. I didn't know who he was talking about and
said no.
So after waiting a while we opened the door and the guy outside said the explosion
was a no-go. They had to reset it, so I heard the computer saying "t minus
10". and I shut the door and said it was going to go off in 10 mins ( I wasn't
thinking very hard, and it went off in 10 seconds). we all felt & heard the
explosion. The room shook a bit and then it was over. I got to go outside
with my dad and see the outside of the mansion. It was big and had rounded
roofs.
My dad stopped at one point and the mansion was a hospital and had a gift
shop. We went inside. Then on the way out was a sort of breakfast line where
we grabbed some weird food. I grabbed a lot of sweet lollipop type things
and some little egg-rolls.
In some other random part of this dream I gave this pastor guy some money
to give to people who had birthdays. I gave him like $25 for one person and
said I would give him $25 for the other person. I thought this would really
make them happy for their birthday. The pastor was surprised that I was giving
money. Then I was sitting around with my mom and this pastor (I didn't recognize
him, now that I think about it, but he was familiar). I pulled out my wallet
and counted my money. I had a $100 bill and some smaller bills. He and my
mom again seemed surprised that I had that much money.
THE REALITY The dreamer had been trying to be nicer to people at work. But
she had had a cold and was having difficulty even talking to people. She was
especially trying to be nice to one guy who seemed to be at a difficult point
in his life.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I wanted to be nice to people at work. But it was so hard as its hard
trying to be nice because I have got a cold at the moment. I cannot make anyone
feel good with a stuffed up nose."
THE INTERPRETATION The mansion is a good point to start this dream. Mansions
are symbols of the self but its not quite as simple as that. Mansions and
other large buildings are symbols of yourself in the wider world. One issue
for the dreamer which involved other people and the wider world was how she
wished to get on better with other people at work.
There does seem to be several connections which may link to this issue. In
the dream there were several people who reminded her of people from work.
That is not by chance. Often a link to work will show the dream is about some
work issue.
Another good link was the basement. In the dream the basement is to be blown
up. In dreams basements link to grudges and bad feelings. It is about bad
and hidden feelings. So the blowing up of the basement is about getting rid
of her own bad feelings and trying to get along with people better.
The young people who look cute are perhaps symbols of a wish to appeal more
cool and cute. To make people feel good about themselves.
The dreamer mentioned one person in particular whom she was trying to be nice
to. Hospitals often symbolise hurt feelings and injured emotions. Perhaps
visiting the hospital shows she is addressing and taking into account these
feelings.
Gifts in dreams are not usually about birthdays. They are more about being
nice to someone. They show that you are making a special effort. Perhaps the
way on which the explosion goes off too quickly shows that she has overdone
this. If you attempt to be something that you are not. If you try to show
someone a new side of you often that can be overdone. Indeed parents are symbols
of caution and sensible judgment. So perhaps she is being sensible. If you
try to show someone how much you feel and wish to console them and make them
feel good about themselves then it is sometimes condescending.
And one thing to consider is. If you are feeling down with a cold that you
cannot shake off then going around trying to spread joy and happiness is not
easy. You are more likely to depress people. So perhaps the surpise shown
at the dreamer when she gives vast amounts of money away links to the fact
that she has not got all that much to feel happy about at that time as she
is laden down with a cold.
