SNAKES : Snakes are in some ways quite difficult but in other ways
rather easy symbols., They are difficult because they can refer to lots of
things such as an awkward sexual encounter, a person you do not get on with,
a person who is deceitful, and a fear that some bad thing may happen very
quickly. But all these things can be reduced to some simple questions - what
is the biggest problem in your life right now? What do you fear in the day
to come? What difficult relationship is causing you problems? What problems
are you wrestling with?
KEY WORDS(Pick a quote which captures your feelings right now. Think especially
of the day before the dream) :
- "I do not want to be drawn into that dispute"
- "she tries to twist everything I say"
- "I feel she could die at any moment "
- "I am terrified - it could happen at any moment"
- "Its such a difficult relationship"
-"I was singled out for criticism"
- "She snaps at me"
- "He complained"
- "They started fighting"
- "I just cannot deal with that"
- "You ought to be wary of him"
- "I do not like being in that atmosphere"
- "I know she thinks I am trying to avoid the blame"
- "I realise now that I was wrong to deceive my ex girlfriend"
- "Its a task which I cannot seem to conquer - I am just lacking creativity
and insight"
- "it could have been a phallic symbol"

SPIDERS : Spiders are a little like snakes in that they usually refer
to something bad in your life. They will usually refer to some situation where
you feel trapped or stuck. Perhaps you dislike your job and wish to move to
something more interesting. Perhaps you feel stuck in a relationship. Just
think of those emotions about being caught in a spiders web. Where do you
feel that same sense in real life or been unable to move.
KEY WORDS(Pick a quote which captures your feelings right now. Think especially
of the day before the dream) :
- "I feel trapped in depression"
- "My family will just not let me have my freedom"
- "I don't feel she can ever escape from this situation she has got herself
in"
- "I feel trapped in my job"
- "I am just stuck here"
- "I feel unable to make a decision"

DREAM STUDIES : Real dreams about snakes and spiders
--------------------------
THE DREAM This is my third snake dream in the last week. I always make
note of the colour. This snake was black. I was outside and my mom (who is
deceased) grabbed a hold of it, as it was coming my way. It still bit me on
my right middle finger. I had to go to the hospital because the venom was
lethal. However it was a small bite (like a paper cut) and I didn't feel unwell.
Why all these recurrent snake dreams? This was the first one where I was bit.
THE REALITY This snake dreams could have linked to the death of the dreamers
grandmother. They coincided in the run up to her death
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "My grandmother is ill in hospital. I fear she could die at any moment".
THE INTERPRETATION Often snakes link to something that could strike at any
time(just in the way a snake can come up and bite you unawares). Its quite
possible that the two are connected. It certainly the most feasible explanation.
However the dreamer was in a mood the previous week and was a bit snappy.
In such a case there are two possible explanations yet the most likely is
the concern over her grandmother.
The need to go to the hospital may have been literal. If someone is ill and
about to die we try to be with them towards the end. However, if the death
is a slow and lingering death then maybe its a difficult decision. Each day
the dreamer is asking if "this is my grandmothers last day". If someone is
about to die we may try to make a special effort. But its impractical to visit
the hospital every moment of every day so its often difficult to judge when
to visit or not.
Symbolic Meanings
BITE : "her grandmothers death"
SNAKE : "a problem that can strike at any time - in this case the death of
her grandmother which could happen at any time"
------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : Snakes dreams seem very complex and abstract by their very
nature but they are probably much more simple to solve than most. Snakes point
to traps and bad things in your life. Just ask yourself 'what is the biggest
problem I currently face?".
------------------------------------
THE DREAM The scene took place somewhere like Arizona, where there
was miles of desert sand. He saw a tan coloured rattlesnake. It was trying
to attack him but instead he stomped on it and squished its head. He said
he walked away and the rattle will still trying to shake but then fizzled
down to silence. There was also a male figure in this dream but I do not remember
who it was.
THE REALITY In reality, the day before the dreamer a lot on his mind about
a decision to go back to work at the one company or start his own business.
This decision process has been quite consuming to him.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I am in two minds right now. Should I set up my own business or should
I go back to work for my old boss who is often a liar".
THE INTERPRETATION It is best to interpret a dream in the context of problems
which are on your mind. This dream was thinking a lot about a decision to
go form his own business. So what could the symbols stand for here. The snake
could represent his boss who is manipulative and a liar. Snakes can stand
for relationships with people we do not trust. The snake could easily stand
for the problems with starting a business and fear of going bankrupt.
The dream also features a desert and deserts and to relate to relationships
and situations which lack any meaning within us. It is often best in a dream
to have a guess as to what the symbols mean entirely. Symbols can link together
to build up an entire thought process. So perhaps the dream means that "I
either have the option to set up business myself or to continue in a job which
I dislike and a boss I do not trust".
Symbolic Meanings
DESERT : "My present job lacks meaning to me - I feel unable to develop my
potential there"
SNAKE : "The fear that a newly founded business could go bust"
SNAKE : "A dislike of working with my present boss who is a liar"
------------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : Dreams tend to link to issues currently in our minds. Think
about all the things that happened the day before and see what could link
with a snake. A snake symbolises traps and problems. Look especially at difficult
situations that involve liars or resentments. Think about situations about
to develope on the day of the dream - traps you would hope to avoid.
-----------------------------------------
THE DREAM We were standing somewhere, not sure where and talking. Then
I looked down and a bunch of snakes where around us. I went to pick up something
and a copperhead made a strike and bit me on the hand in which I woke up.
THE REALITY The dreamer and his wife were going through a nasty divorce -
one which the dreamer did not want. The way she was treating him led to him
growing to hate her.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I am trying to prevent my marriage from breaking down. But right now
its very bitter. I am growing to hate my wife".
THE INTERPRETATION Snakes symbolise problems and things that will bite us.
So a nasty divorce is a perfect is prime territory for snake dreams. Here
the dream captures how the dreamer feels unable to act in any way in order
to secure his marriage.
Symbolic Meanings
SNAKE : "The dreamer is stuck in a problem marriage - the relationhsip is
growing very bitter"
--------------------------
DREAM TIP : Try to think of dream symbols as words. Think of snakes
in dreams as the word 'bad' or 'trap'. Then try to write down a few quotes
which capture all major issues and in particular things that took place the
day before. Think of quotes like "I really dislike my boss. He singled me
out again yesterday', or "I think my sister is depressed - maybe I should
try to cheer her up", or "I am looking forward to the big match on Saturday".
Now look back at those quotes and see where the words 'bad' or 'trap' appear.
If they do appear its possible that the dream relates directly to that issue.
--------------------------
THE DREAM I was dreaming about a snake approaching to me. It was the
biggest snake I have seen. It had bright colors and was really huge. I heard
my best friend telling me “stay still. Turn your back slowly and just stay
calm and it wont hurt you.” And I did just as she said. The snake was about
to come around me but I was still calm, although scared.
THE REALITY The dreamer had just had a sexual experience with a man she met
whilst on holiday. She had found it difficult to achieve an orgasm. Her partner
realised this and explained to her that it was because they did not have enough
time and had slightly rushed this.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I am on holiday and have met a man whom I had sex with".
THE INTERPRETATION Snakes have for many years been known as sexual metaphors.
This dream occured after this sexual experience and shows the dreamer learning
more about her own body and how to feel sexual pleasure. The dream clearly
has a feel of the advice that was given to her. The best friend probably symbolises
the role that her lover was pllaying - the role of best friend who would talk
things through and be sympathetic to her needs. Often huge things can link
to the outside world. It shows that someone or something has had a big impact
on you.
Symbolic Meanings
BEST FRIEND : "an ideal situation - the dreamers lover is trying to be as
considerate as possible"
CALM : "the dreamers lover was trying to calm her down"
SNAKE : "a sexual symbol"
-----------------------------
DREAM TIP : During the day we store everything that happens in our
short term memory banks. Then at night we start to work through and make sense
of everything that happened. Thats why dreams concentrate so much on the day
before the dream. They are part of the process by which we integrate yesterdays
feelings into long term emotions. So think through the things that happened
yesterday and the new feelings as they developed.
----------------------------
THE DREAM I dreamt that I was at my parents' house and there were two
snakes loose in the house. A fat tan colored snake that just slithered around
the house and a huge black snake that was all over my mother. The very bizarre
part was that the black snake had eight legs under it's neck like a spider
and it was pulling its huge body around with these little legs. My mother
was trying to get it off of her because she knew that it was poisonous. She
finally shook it off without it biting her.
THE REALITY The dreamers mom went into a deep depression and for 13 years
now she hardly ever gets out of bed. She has diabetes, is obese, has anxiety
attacks, has had two strokes and because of lack of use, her legs barely work.
The dreamer worries endlessly about losing her. The dreamer tends to be her
own worse enemy.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "My mom is stuck in her present situation. Her mental health has always
been bad but now she is also virtually bed bound. I fear she could die at
any moment".
THE INTERPRETATION The dream features this dreamers mother very heavily so
its worth assuming that the dream is about her. In reality she is very sick
and tends to be her own worse enemy.
The dream features a spider or at least a snake that resembles a spider. Spiders
tend to symbolise feelings and situations that we are trapped in(a little
like the spiders web).
The dreamers mother is in many ways unable to escape the situation she is
in. As her legs gets worse it affects her depression which in turn gets worse.
Its an endless spiral.
Snakes and spiders are symbols of warning. That we need to escape the situation
we are in or that we face danger. This snake could easily symbolise the dreamers
fear that her mother might die. That could strike at any time just like the
snakes bite.
The dream then captures the exact feelings of the dreamer - "I feel my mothers
legs are getting worse. If she does not make an effort soon she may die or
may never be able to escape the endless cycle of physical ill health and depression".
The number two in dreams is often symbolic. It refers to situations where
there is a choice. It shows maybe that we can act one way or choose an entirely
different course. Here it symbolises the dreamers mother and the fact that
she can still escape becoming totally bedbound.
Symbolic Meanings
SNAKE : "a fear that my mother could die"
SPIDER : "A fear that my mothers legs will become so bad she will never recover.
she will be trapped"
TWO : "a situation which can go either way. There is a choice involved with
two potential outcomes."
--------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : Dreams do not have to be about events. Dreams are about
the things within your mind. A dream can be linked to fantasies within your
life. If you suddenly become upset with a crush then thats enough to generate
a dream. Dreams are about the stuff that is in your mind and it really does
not matter if that is real or simply paranoia or fantasy.
--------------------------------------
THE DREAM I I dreamt that I was in a jungle like setting with me and
my eldest sister. It was a community with houses surrounded by trees. There
was morning dew all over. No neighbours said much if anything.
Me and my sister were led out by a community leader. To our left was a large
snake laying dead and bloody like it had been cut. When I spoke the snake
began to move. Me and my sister ran outside. So when me and my sister were
saying good-bye to the community leader the snake was waiting for us across
the street. We ran but it moved very swiftly.
I told my sister that it wants me to look after its child. When I said this
it stopped as though it was in agreement. But I did not want to do this so
I started naming different people. As I named them the snake kept getting
larger and larger. It was upset that I could not read its mind. It kept breaking
up into pieces then it would die again. Whenever I spoke it kept getting larger
and larger. It also kept following me around until I woke up.
THE REALITY The dreamer was a property manager for low income housing. He
had for the previous month been picking up a child for the a tenant from school
because her mom was at work. But he would rather not do this permanently.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "One of my tenants has been asking me to pick up her child from school.
I am going to tell her I do not want to do this on a permanent basis. But
I know she is not going to like this and will try to twist things that I say".
THE INTERPRETATION Often snake dreams link to day to day issues and problems
which can strike at any time. They are very often associated with accidents
or problems or deceit. Generally the snake may symbolise anything bad in your
life right now. It may link to people you do not like or traps that you have
got caught in.
There is one issue which springs immediately to mind for the dreamer. He was
having to pick up a child from school but overall would rather not have this
responsibility. So lets look for evidence to support this idea. Do the other
symbols help confirm this?
The dream features a community leader. This is a good help as that clearly
is a symbol which is consistent with the ideas put forward. The community
leader in this case represents the community spirit in which the dreamer at
first agreed to help his tenant out by picking up the child.
One clear indication is that the snake wants the dreamer to look after its
child. Thats a very literal representation of the truth. But it also indicates
what the snake symbolises too. The snake symbolises the devious nature of
the dreamers tenant and her ability to move quickly in trying to persuade
him to change his mind. The snake gets bigger because he knows she will try
anything to trap him into agreeing. In its simplest form the snake represents
the dreamers feelings that as soon as he tells his tenant he is no longer
willing to pick up her child from school she will be a dangerous and tricky
creature to be around - it shows that he would like to tell her and then quickly
get out before she has chance to persuade him round to her way of thinking.
So why is the sister in the dream? Sisters symbolise emotions and openness
to explore new feelings. They represent the way that sisters sit around and
explore every aspect of some emotional issue. Here it probably links to the
dreamers worries about how his tenant is likely to react. He obviously does
not want to say the wrong thing and wishes to find the right words.
Symbolic Meanings
COMMUNITY LEADER : "Helping people around you - the dreamers good nature
in agreeing to pick up the child from school"
NAMES : "Specific reasons the dreamer names for not picking up the child"
RUNNING : "wanting to tell his tenant and quickly get out"
SISTER : "working out what everyone's feelings are"
SNAKE : "Problems and traps - Fears of how his tenant will react when
he tells her he no longer wishes to continue picking up the child"
-----------------------------
DREAM TIP : Often we go to sleep upset in some way. Then when we wake
up we feel healed. That petty argument we went to sleep thinking about has
been put into perspective and its forgotten. Dreams then will concentrate
on these subjects so if you went to sleep upset you know that this will generate
a dream.
-----------------------------
THE DREAM I dreamed that I was going for a walk to take a break from
moving. I came to what looked like a birds nest and in it were hundreds to
even thousands of spider eggs. I got to the nest just as the mother spider
had finished laying the last of them and almost immediately they began to
hatch and there were hundreds of these baby spiders crawling everywhere and
the eggs kept on hatching. Even though the baby spiders were crawling all
over the place and it seemed chaotic, the mother spider calmly kept them in
the nest somehow.
THE REALITY
The dreamer has a very dominant mother. In fact the whole family is very dominant.
The dreamer has a difficulty being independant. She has her own ideas and
wishes to send a message to her family to stop intefering with her life.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "My mother is quite dominant and will not allow me to run my own life.
My brothers are almost as bad".
THE INTERPRETATION
The dream features a spider. Often spiders are seen as symbolic of circumstances
where we feel trapped. The spiders web is symbolic of something that you cannot
get away from - it entangles you. In this case the dreamer did have to struggle
against her family who all tried to influence her and keep her in check. In
particular she has a mother who tries to instill the importance of family.
Recently the dreamer has been trying to send some messages out. To suggest
that her family backs off and allows her to get on with things in her own
way. Clearly as she is moving in the dream she is undergoing change in her
life.
In this case the mother spider is mentioned and may even symbolise her own
mother. One symbol of importance is the birds nest. Birds can symbolise communication.
The land in dreams symbolises the facts about our life. But the birds fly
through the air which symbolises change and the ability and freedom to change.
They symbolise ideas and proposals about the future. So maybe the birds nest
symbolises the dreamers own attempts to communicate her own feelings and wish
to change. The infestation of this with spiders eggs symbolises her mothers
attempts to resist her own attempts at independence.
Symbolic Meanings
BIRDS NEST : "communication and a wish to fly freely"
MOVING : "The dreamer is in a period of transition"
SPIDER : "Stuck in circumstances - the dreamers own dominant family"
----------------------------
DREAM TIP : The dream mind is one where we form concepts. One example
of a conceptual thought is "I am trying to avoid trouble at work. I hope to
defuse tension by bringing people together". So try to think up quotes which
capture and sum up the current state of your feelings. The dream mind constructs
these thoughts using symbols. So then try to look for evidence within these
symbols of your own feelings.
--------------------------
THE DREAM I was with some man. I knew him in the dream, but in waking
life I do not know him. We had to go through a series of obstacles and at
the end there was something we would get or we could have been looking for
something. But there was something at the end for us if we got through all
the obstacles thrown our way. The first was a large hole in the floor that
we had to swing from a rope in a circle to get to the bottom. Each completed
circle we were closer to the bottom. Next we went through a screen door and
into the back yard, which had a large cage in front of us. We thought we could
go through it because all it had in it was cats. As we got close to it we
saw that it was not cats. It was some animal with a pig face and a possum
body and tail, so we did not go through it. For some reason we knew we could
not go to our right and we had no choice, but to go to our left. The man was
ahead of me and for some reason he stopped and came back to go back in through
the screen door. When we tried there were 2 rattle snakes there and we could
not get by them. So we turned around and there was my bed in the yard. I laid
down on the bed and I have no idea where the man went, but these 2 snakes
came toward the bed. They crawled onto the bed with me, but when they got
to me they had turned into cartoon snakes and they were blue. They were real
at the screen door. So I started hitting at them with a yellow broom. It did
not work, so I grabbed one with my left hand and started to choke it. I kept
hitting at the one on the right with the broom, which did not work, so I grabbed
it and started choking it too. The last I remember is seeing these 2 snakes
gasping for air as I choked them. I was never afraid in my dream. I was confident
and I felt secure that I was going to win.
THE REALITY In real life the dreamer broke up with her boyfriend three months
before the dream. But recently she had been contacted by him and he was showing
concern and interest in her. Her ex boyfriend claims that he did not start
seeing his new girlfriend until after he had broken up with the dreamer. But
the dreamer does not believe this and does not trust his new girlfriend.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I do not trust what my boyfriend says. We have got back together but
I do not believe him when he says he was not seeing me and his ex at the same
time. He is a lair"
THE INTERPRETATION Snakes are symbols of problems and traps that the dreamer
is facing. Here there are two snakes. That often links to situation when there
are two possible alternatives or where the dreamer has mixed feelings. It
tends to symbolise moments when you have two ways of looking at the world.
This dream is obviously not easy to understand as it is entirely symbolic
dealing with pigs, snakes and unknown men. But actually the dream does seem
very consistent with the real life issues which are dominating the dreamers
mind at present.
The unknown man could easily represent her ex boyfriend. Men often symbolise
aggressive and pushy actions. Here it could symbolise how he is pushing his
way back into her life. But it could also be a symbol of her ex boyfriend
himself. He is unknown because much of what he says she does not truly trust.
Snakes are symbols of all kinds of traps and deceptions. He could easily symbolise
the dreamers feelings about her ex and inability to trust exactly what he
says.
The left and right are often symbolic in dreams. The left can link to the
left brain and the real world and the past. The right links to the right mind(the
home of the imagination) and the future and thoughts about the future. Here
the left hand is used maybe symbolic of the dreamer looking at the past with
he ex boyfriend and dwelling on what happened in reality rather than what
he is saying.
The pig could easily symbolise her ex boyfriend. He is literally associated
with all the negative aspects of pigs.
Beds are very personal symbols. They symbolise moments when people have made
very personal approaches to you and shown care and consideration for your
feelings. That would link to the personal concern the dreamers ex has shown
for her just recently.
The dream then simply shows that the dreamer is wary of her ex boyfriend and
maybe is trying not to trust him. She is thinking of the hurt he has caused
her in the past.
Symbolic Meanings
BED : "a very personal symbol - symbolic of the personal concern and
help the ex boyfriend is showing for the dreamer"
LEFT HAND : "looking at issues through the left brain - concentrating
on the facts and the past"
PIG : "her ex boyfriend"
SNAKES : "traps and problems - wondering if she should trust her ex boyfriend"
TWO : "mixed feelings about something - in two minds about her ex boyfriend"
--------------------------------
DREAM TIP : The dreams we have are like news bulletins which summarize
the changes in our feelings. Think of ways in which your emotions have changed
during the previous day. Think of the new feelings rising to the surface.
Think of the little ways in which your view slightly changed.
-------------------------------
THE DREAM I keep dreaming of insects, not the same types, last night
it was lots of tiny grey spiders with really circular bodies. Two nights ago
i dreamt of big man eating beetle type things. I'm not scared of the insects
in the dreams, but there are just so many of them all running about. Two nights
ago i was trying to vacuum them up. I have had more about insects but these
two are the most recent that i remember.
THE REALITY The dreamer was living with in unpleasant living conditions. She
had found small beetles in her kitchen. She also was irritated permanently
by the loud music and noise coming from her neighbour. When she moved out
of her flat the dreams stopped.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I hate where I am living at present. On neighbour is so annoying.
Also there was an infestation of little beetles. Its awful."
THE INTERPRETATION The dream features different kinds of insects and so may
easily symbolise some kind of petty irritations that the dreamer has to face.
So its probably an easily solved dream. The dreamer merely has toi ask themselves
what petty irritations are continually annoying them. In this case the dreamer
was living in a flat which had an infestation of beetles. that easily explains
one of the dreams. The spiders can suymbolise probelsm and situations you
cannot get away from. An irritating neighbour who is disturbing your attempts
to sleep is as good a trigger for that as anything.
Symbolic Meanings
BEETLES : "the dreamers fear of the real life infestatiuon of beetles
in her kitchen"
SPIDERS : "an inability to escape from her home living conditions and
her neighbour"
VACCUUM : "attempts to combat and cope with infestations - keeping the
home clean"
--------------------------
DREAM TIP : Dreams are about pivotal moments in our emotions. They
represent change. For instance you may suddenly decide that someone you know
is not to be trusted. So on balance you have decided to alter your view.
--------------------------
THE DREAM I saw a black shadow surrounded by a snake shedding its skin.
The weird thing was that it’s a video and I saw it on the elegant silver phone.
THE REALITY The day after the dream the dreamer was hiking with her friend.
There was a car on the road, it was going was to fast and it fell into a valley.
By the time they had gone down some people had already pulled out a body of
a man who did not survive.
DREAM MEANING The dream captures the following feeling within the dreamer
- "I think this dream was a premonition of a mans death on the day of
the dream. He crashed a car. Snakes shedding their skins represent death"
THE INTERPRETATION In an ancient dream Artemidorus the Greek dream interpretor
tells of a man who had a dream of a snake shedding its skin and the next day
the man died. So snakes shedding skins can be symbolic of life ending.
In this case the dreamer often had premonitions and one strong indicator of
such dreams was the elegant telephone.
In this case the video probably captures the feeling within the dreamer that
she was watching something similar to a movie. It was like a movie in that
she did not know anyone involved in the incident.
Symbolic Meanings
ELEGANT TELEPHONE : "The dreamers extra sensory perception. This usually
indicates the dream is a premonition"
SNAKE SHEDS SKIN : "The man dies in reality"
--------------------------------------
DREAM TIP : Dreams are about our changing emotions. Do not expect dreams
to give perfect advice on the pressing issues of the day. They can be linked
to telepathy and psychic activity yet the vast majority of dreams link to
the way we are relating to life and issues at hand. Our feelings are complex
and often confused. The dreams may link to some clear path of action. But
expect that clear path to change. Our own emotions are very fickle. Dreams
by their very nature concentrate on difficult and tricky subjects. We may
even have two dreams in the same night which contain two completely opposite
thoughts on the same subject.
