1903 - From Connecticut USA came the hamburger which started between bread until the bun was introduced in the 1930's. 1902- Kellog's Cornflakes were introduced onto the market. 1913- The zipper fastener was patented by a Swedish engineer. 1908- There were 16 million model T Ford's sold between 1908 and 1927. 1905- "The Preacher And The Bear" was the first million selling record by Arthur Coolins. 1912 - The sinking of the unsinkable "Titanic" (British ocean liner). 1906 - A massive San Franciscan earthquake killed two and a half thousand people and left 300,000 homeless. 1913- The tallest building in the world was in Manhattan .The Woolworths building had 60 storeys and was 792 feet tall. 1918 - Jazz music began to florish and spread from it's beginnings in New orleans and Kansas City. 1938 - Orsen Wells aired his "War Of The Worlds" on October 30th. 1941- War came when Japanese forces launched an attack on Pearl Harbour ,Hawaii. 1930s-40s- The golden age of comedy including Marx Brothers,WC Fields,Mae West,Abbott & Costello and Charlie Chaplin. 1945- The (Newk) microwave Oven was invented at $3,000(US) each. 1945- A young Frank Sinatra supported racial integration . 1946- Norma Jean Doherty changed her name to Marilyn Monroe. 1955- The Ed Sullivan Show goes to air. 1948- Television is billed as a threat to theatre and cinemas in America. 1949 - For the first time people were warned that smoking may cause cancer. 1949 - The 45rpm record was introduced by RCA. 1950- The end of old time radio as programmers changed to music programs moving away from the serials. 1953 - Hugh Hefner introduces his "Playboy" magazine. 1955 - "The Mickey Mouse Club" debuts on television. 1956 - Youth was reportedly being corrupted by "Rock & Roll" music. 1956- Elvis Presley has ten hits in his first year. 1959 - George Reeves (Superman) dies in mystery. It was never solved. 1962- Marilyn Monroe dies in a mystery. 1964- "Beatlemania" takes the world by storm. 1965- The "Lava Light" comes into fashion with sales of two million. 1967- Tie-dye "Summer Of Love" hippy flower people florish in San Francisco. 1969- "Woodstock" the three day music festival in New York. 1975- The end of the Vietnam War. 1977- A banner year for Hollywood including "Star Wars" and "Saturday Night Fever". 1980- Sony's Walkman was introduced. 1983 - The year of the Cabbage Patch Doll. 1989- Nintendo's "Gameboy" begins it's life. 1990- The U.S. population hit 249 million. 1997- Rosewell Mexico became synonomous (UFO buffs) with government coverups. 1998- President Clinton puts his credability on the line. 1999- Hollywood enters "Teensloitation" with a chain of teen films. |
