This is Ruth Musser Middle School in Rancho Cucamonga, California...when Louise passed away in November 1993, they were building this new school. Upon completion, a tree was planted in the front of the school in her Memory...there it grows, the ONLY tree of it's kind...there on the right...actually it's in the MIDDLE in the very front of the school...

This is what the tree looks like now...

When Louise passed away, she was active in Peer Leading (for 8th Graders only). A "Peer Leader" acts as a "Counselor". This is a student who can listen, clarify, guide, and support another student thus enabling that student to make responsible decisions about his/her behavior. She was just that and more. Being that this was the first year they had began "Peer Leading"...they renamed this award that goes to an "8th grader" at Graduation, to the "Louise Torres Peer Leader Award"...this was done the year after she passed away (7 months later), during Graduation ceremonies, which would have been HER Graduation from "Middle School". This is it here above. Actually I received this award 6/26/97 at the District Board Meeting. It was presented to me by the School Principal...Mr. Dave Soden (my very own copy). The first year I was able to present this award myself, was in 1997, when we decided to attach a "Savings Bond" in the amount of $50.00 to the recipient. This was a choice they gave us (to present it ourselves). The first fews years were very difficult of course...we are so honored as Louise's Parents, to have her memory live on in such a wonderful and very distinguished school such as Ruth Musser Middle School for many years to come...

Something very SPECIAL to note about this award...I had not seen this award after all these years (3-1/2 years) until the morning that I was to present it to the "recipient" that first year (6/24/97)...if you notice at the top...there is a "stack of books" and at the top of the stack sits a "Genie Lamp". Well Louise LOVED the Genie in the movie "Aladdin"...now I don't know WHO "created" this logo to use for this award and it was strange because neither did the principal as I brought it to his attention..he also remembered she LOVED the Genie and she LOVED READING...now is this a "coincidence" or what??
