Demopolis
The "City of the People" was originally founded by French colonists on the Black Warrior River in what is now west-central Alabama. Although that colony failed, Demopolis thrives as an industrial center. US Highways 43 and 80 intersect near the city, making it a thruway for travellers from northern counties headed towards the Gulf Coast to vacation. As an east-west corridor, US 80 connects Meridian, MS with historic Selma, AL and the state capital, Montgomery.

US 11 and I-59/20 meld just outside the Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Co. line as one heads into the Magic City of Birmingham. There are back ways into and thru Birmingham (such as the old-old highway, Tuscaloosa Ave) but the Bessemer Super Highway has the most to offer as far as sights. Heading east into Bessemer/B'ham, take the Academy Drive exit off of the interstate and turn left. (If you pass the Bessemer Civic Center -- the electronic marquee will say "Gun Show Sept. 10-11" or "Bluegrass Festival" -- then you've gone too far.)

Highlights include: the State Fairgrounds, a huge thrift store and at the same intersection the Chinese version of a greasy spoon, the Egg Roll Express, the
smokestacks of Sloss Furnace, and all kinds of urban decay in the downtown area. Multiple returns to the
interstate system exist if you get scared or
aren't into the package store scene.
