water tower in the pasture at Red Level, AL on Hwy 55
Red Level, AL
on State Highway 55
AL 55 runs north/south between US 31 near McKenzie in Butler County down to the state line at Florala, where it becomes FLA 85 to Laurel Hill. Although there are almost no towns along the southern end of the highway, it is four-laned. Many of Alabama's highways near the Gulf Coast are similarly widened as they act as hurricane evacuation routes.

You'd hardly know you were passing thru Red Level
were it not for the markings on this tower. The four-lane completely bypasses any signs of civilization.
