I-59's route from I-24 (just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee) to I-10 (just north of Slidell, Louisiana) traces the southern end of US Hwy 11. Mostly shaded pine straightaways and soft curves punctuated by quiet small towns, the old highway makes for some pleasant riding. This is not farm territory by any means (more logging, really, so some stretches are barren and harsh) therefore tractor delays are rare but local traffic can be intermittently turtle-ish. Practice your smile or index finger nod wave or partake of some religiously oriented radio. Watch for troopers, too, as the area is not unpatrolled. Actual speed traps are rare, however. If you have the time, US 11 is a welcome relief from the relative monotony of the interstate. |
