My very first attempt to involve myself with veteran vehicles was the purchase of a VeloSolex 3800, which I promptly had to sell again to help finance another restauration. Subsequently I have stumbled over a VeloSolex 2200 from 1963, a relatively rare model (compared to the 3800) but still common enough to make spares hunting easy enough. This bike is a cellar bike, completely original, and with fittings for the optional extra gas can, a real rarity (if somebody has one, then please, please.......). I have not decided yet how much to restore this machine. One thing I have learnt is how easy it is to lose originality by simply sand-blasting and respraying. I have managed to get the motor running, and need to fit a new chain-wheel / brake pads / chain, and the front forks may need blasting and painting, but I would prefer to run the bike for a few seasons before deciding. |
