I put my notes on how to make transparent gifs with photoshop 7 at the end of this document. the notes in the middle of the document tell how to make transparent gifs with photoshop 5 or 6.
but 1st a blurb on these flaws in the rio salado college computer system.
their is a bug in the rio salado college computer login system.
normally when you come in the compter has a screen that forces you to enter your social security number and swear that you are a student of rio salado college. after that you get access to the START icon and can execute programs.
BUT.........
the people that run the lab are very lazy and often dont turn on the computers. this is where the BUG comes in.
while the computers are booting the START button is visiable and you can execute programs with out login in thru the rio salado college system.
so you can beat the rio salado log in system by either
1) rebooting your computer. and executing programs before the rio salado security system is installed or
2) mearly turning on the computer and when you see the START BUTTON use it to execute your favorite program.
------------------------------------------------------ these are my notes on photoshop plus in the zip disk ------------------------------------------------------ to scan stuff on the stinking mac computer or apple computer to start PHOTOSHOP on the mac 1) click on the APPLE ICON on hte top line its an APPLE ICON with a bite taken out it it click on that. its like the START button on windows 2) colors) 3) click on FINAL button to do final scan 4) save with item a. use SAVE_AS_COPY b. save on MAC HARD DRIVE DONT Save on ZIP disk c. type extension like .JPG in file name dont let photoshop do it 5) now DRAG the file from the MAC HARD DRIVE to your ZIP DISK to copy it over 5) hard CODE extension like JPG ------------------------------------------------------ these are my notes on photoshop plus in the zip disk ------------------------------------------------------ this also undo's mistakes EDIT UNDO CNTL/Z - is used to UNDO mistakes or fix errors ESC - is also used to UNDO mistakes or fix mistakes ESC also works to fix errors made with the magnetic roping took ESC undoes errors made with rope tool ------------------------------------------------------ in in GIMP you use CNTL/X to delete a selected area in photo shop you use the DEL key to delete a selected area after deleting the area use Select Deselect to get rid of the selection so you can do something else i think thats the same as CNTL/SHIFT/A in gimp ------------------------------------------------------ SHIFT + TAB - hides/unhides all palettes TAB - hides/unhiders tool box and all pallettes to get a tools propertys DOUBLE CLICK on the tool ONLINE HELP - hit F1 to get online help adobe's web page has help on it. its http://www.adobe.com to remove or show any palette window go click on WINDOW SHOW ------------------------------------------------------ to scrool thru the image (when it wont fit on your screen you can either 1) use the scroll bars 2) use the HAND tool to move the image around which i find much easier ------------------------------------------------------ in the NAVIGATOR palette the scroll bar controls the size of the image your editing not the magnification in the NAVIGATOR palette in the NAVIAGTOR palette you can use the CNTL + HAND to rope the area of the picture you want to look at in the edit box. basicly this draws a square around the area and lets you zoom to it ------------------------------------------------------ any tool with a > at the bottom of the tool has hidden tools in the area to view the hidden tools 1) move the mouse over the tool 2) hold the mouse button down this will cause the hidden tools to be displayed 3) click on the tool you want to use ------------------------------------------------------ to see all the options and stuff for any tool double click on the tool the options will then be seen ------------------------------------------------------ to unselect something or undo something 1) click on SELECT DESELECT you can get it back by going SELECT RESELECT also the EDIT button can unselect stuff too with EDIT UNDO RESELECT ..... and EDIT PURGE UNDO ------------------------------------------------------ 1) select some area with any of the rope tools 2) KEEP THE MOUSE BUTTON HELD DOWN 3) to move the circle or square you selected to a slightly different position WHILE STILL HOLDING DOWN THE MOUSE BUTTON hold down the SPACE BAR now when you move the mouse the circle or square or selected thing moves and you can get precise about what you want to select: ------------------------------------------------------ when that and make the selection a PERFECT SQUARE or PERFECT circle after holding down the ALT hold down the SHIFT to select a PERFECT SQUARE or CIRCLE 4) to make your selection first RELEASE the MOUSE button next RELEASE the SHIFT and ALT ------------------------------------------------------ now you have selected some thing. you can either MOVE the selected thing or DUPLICATE the selected thing to MOVE the selected thing 1) after selecting the thing CLICK on the MOVE tool 2) move the image where you want it (the old image will be deleted) 3) when the image is at the correct location click on SELECT DESELECT and the image will be pasted where you want it to be pasted to DUPLICATE the selected thing 1) after selecting the thing CLICK on the MOVE tool and hold down the ALT key this will duplicated 90 degrees to the right or left or 90 degrees up or down or you can move it at 45 degree angles you can move the selected thing around with the arrow keys the ARROW keys will move the image ONE pixel at a time the SHIFT ARROW keys will move the image TEN pixels at a time ------------------------------------------------------ when selecting stuff you can turn off the marching ants with VIEW HIDE EDGES - turns off the marching ants VIEW SHOW EDGES - turns back on the marching ants ------------------------------------------------------- i think CNTL/X, CNTL V, and CNTL/C work but they can be done using the EDIT CUT EDIT COPY EDIT PASTE EDIT CUT ------------------------------------------------------- to add more stuff to a selected area hit the SHIFT key when doing the next select to delete stuff from a selected area hit the ALT key when doing the next select (i think GIMP uses the CNTL key instead of the ALT key) hit the SHIFT key when doing the next select ------------------------------------------------------- when you selecting stuff with the LASSO to switch to the LINE LASSO 1) select your curved line 2) hold down the ALT key 3) release the mouse move the mouse to the next line point and CLICK repeate this for each point 4) to switch to curve mode again CLICK on the last point continue to hold down the mouse release the ALT key now continue to draw freehand lines ------------------------------------------------------- the MAGNETIC LASSO can automaticlly find high contrast areas an select them for you. i used it on the grapefruit to cut the fruit from the skin - which is a high contrast area. i think this is the same as the smart sizzors in GIMP if you fuck up and put in a location that is wrong hit the DELETE button to remove the last 1 or more points entered. also in my case with the grapefruit the magnetic lasso followed the path with out me telling it. it was pretty smart. ------------------------------------------------------ to ROTATE RESIZE TRANSFORM photoshop does not have icons for these like GIMP does so click on EDIT TRANSFORM SCALE ROTATE SKEW DISTORT PERSPECTIVE (when using these SHIFT key says when scaling something keep the same overall dimensions, just make it smaller or larger but dont distort it) if you like your transformation and want to use it hit ENTER (just a regular ENTER key nothing else) if you DONT like your transformation click on EDIT FREE TRANSFORM ------------------------------------------------------ cropping - after you do your crop you have to hit ENTER for the crop to take effect ------------------------------------------------------ in gimp you move and copy stuff by selecting stuff and using CNTL/V, CNTL/C to copy it after its been selected in photoshop you use the move tool >+ or MOVE will move the thing to another windown. if you dont select anything it will move a copy of the whole picture to the new window. to CENTER STUFF when moving or copying hit 1) select the MOVE tool >+ 2) click on what you want to move 3) hit the SHIFT key 4) now move it to the new area and it will be centered NOTE - in photoshop when you move stuff it puts it on a new layer for you. nice. ------------------------------------------------------ to move layers around 1) move the cursor to the layers palette 2) click on the layer (a hand shows up) 3) move the layer to its new position ------------------------------------------------------ to change the opacity or see thru percent of a layer 1) select the layer in the layers palette 2) click on the button at the top thats next to OPACITY 3) use the slide bar to change the percent opacity of the layer to select a BLENDING mode which is usually NORMAL click on the box next to the OPACITY box and select a new blending mode to link 2 or more layers in the layers palettee 1) click in the box where the paintbrush shows for the layer you want to link and a chain link will appear the layers are now linked ------------------------------------------------------ when you do transformations to change the size of things you can grab on one of the buttons on the box and use it to shrink or enlarge the image it looks like if you grab on a cornor button it will do an even ratio change of the image. the SHIFT key may do this too like it causes perfect circles and perfect squares and if you grab any of the middle buttons you can fatten or shrink the image. hit ENTER to make the change take effect. ------------------------------------------------------ to add new layers, merge layers, flatten layers, flatten images or get layer options 1) go to the layers palette 2) on the upper right corner of the palette is a > click on it and you will get a menu that says new layer duplicate layer delete layer merge layers flatten image ------------------------------------------------------ as when you copy stuff when you create new text it puts the text on a new layer to bevel and emboss text you go 1) LAYER EFFECTS BEVEL and EMBOSS go thru all the options it can do some slick stuff ------------------------------------------------------ it seems that you can delete changes better (maybe) with photoshop then gimp to delete all changes 1) WINDOW SHOW HISTORY (to view history palette) click on the image at the top of the history palette and ALL your CHANGES will be deleted you can click on any of the lines after it and restore the changes up to that point (it says it only keeps track of the last 20 changes) (note also the CNTL/Z works to delete changes like it does in GIMP) to delete all changes (another way) 1) FILE REVERT (and all changes made will be deleted) ------------------------------------------------------ to reset one or more tools to their default values 1) double click on any tool to get the tool palette 2) click on the > at the right hand top of the tool palette click 3) then select either RESET TOOL or RESET ALL TOOLS ------------------------------------------------------ to turn off the marching ants VIEW HIDE EDGES to turn on or restore the marching ants ------------------------------------------------------ to turn off the stupid checker board in transparent areas FILE PREFERENCES TRANSPARENCY AND GAMUTA now select the GRID SIZE and select the line that says NONE to turn on the stupid checker board in transparent areas do the same shit as above but select a GRID SIZE other then NONE such as LARGE ------------------------------------------------------ to import your paint brushes in the brushes palette click on the > at the top right hand side then select LOAD BRUSHES then enter a file name with the brushes in it (brush files end in .abr ) then it will load the brushes in that file into your brushes palette ------------------------------------------------------ painting behind stuff. say you have an image painted on glass that you can thru some of the glass is clear with nothing painted on it. to paint on the image from behind the glass so you just paint where its clear you select the BEHIND option from any tool menu. its in the left hand box near the top of the menu which normally says NORMAL in this mode you paint on the backside of the picture and only apply paint to areas that are clear. this could be usefull in making stuff like fake drivers licenses where a seal has to appear only on areas outside of a photo ------------------------------------------------------ to define a new type of paint brush 1) draw the paint brush in black and white 2) use the square tool to draw a square around the new paint brush 3) go to the brushes palette and click on the > on the right hand side 5) click on DEFINE BRUSH and the selected image in the SQUARE tool will be added to the brushes palette 6) now double click on the brush you just created and you can set the spacing options and other stuff like you do in GIMP click on OK when your done 6) last to get ride of the stupid SQUARE BOX go SELECT DE SELECT ------------------------------------------------------ to keep painting over other areas you can use the SQUARE tool the COLOR tool (magic wand) to select an area. then when you select a paint brush pencil, air brush it will only draw in the selected area ------------------------------------------------------ to see your brush in the size it will be on the photo go 1) FILE PREFERENCES DISPLAY AND CURSORS 2) under PAINTING CURSORS click on BRUSH SIZE 3) click on OK 4) now when you draw or paint stuff you will see a image thats the size of the area your brush will draw on ------------------------------------------------------ its probably easier to use the QUICK mask at the bottom of the tool box instead of the MASK stuff in the layers the light colored SQUARE ICON with a CIRCLE in it on the LEFT allows you to EDIT the PICTURE the dark colored SQUARE ICON with a CIRCLE in it on the RIGHT allows you to EDIT the MASK masks quick mask just under the color box (with the black/white colors or selected clors) at the bottom of the tool box you have 2 mask boxes the box on the right is normal operating click here to remove the quick mask described on next line when a mask is defined you can edit the picture when this is turned on you can only edit parts of the picture that the mask does not cover the box on the left is the quick mask box click here to mask out everything but the selected area when you do everything that is masked will be highlited in RED. you cant modify stuff in read. to delete parts of RED mask paint it WHITE to add more area to RED mask paint it BLACK to set a partial transparencey use GREY if you want to keep a quick mask from session to session and store it as part of the image you must save it as an alpha channel mask with WINDOWS SHOW CHANNELS then (again click at the same level as the WINDOWS we just did ) go SELECT SAVE SELECTION (a SAVE SELECTION box will pop up) click on OK this will add a ALPHA channel at the bottom of the CHANNELS box that showed up when we did the WINDOWS SHOW CHANNELS stuff turning the EYE on in the ALPHA lawyer shows the RED MASK and of course you can click on the EYE in the other COLORS to show the COLORS you can paint the channel mask with WHITE to remove parts of it or BLACK to cover up more stuff GREY varies transparency to use the stinking channel mask you go SELECT LOAD SELECTION and the masked stuff will appear ------------------------------------------------------ to make the image fill up the whole box double click on the HAND tool double clicking on the MAGNIFY TOOL will make the image become full size. but that may not fill up the whole box double clicking on the HAND tool causes the image to fill the WHOLE BOX ------------------------------------------------------ when you have selected an area and you want to selecte EVERYTHING BUT what you selected thats called inverting the selection by mike inversing the selection by photoshop plus to do it go SELECT INVERT and the selection is inverted: ------------------------------------------------------ cropping you can either 1) select the image free hand by dragging the and selecting what you want (key here is what ever you select will be the size of what you selected) 2) define in advance the size of the image to select in say inches or pixels ie: after the crop i want an image 72 by 144 pixels or 3.5 by 6 inches a - now select the area to crop b - of the image is TILTED you can tilt the crop by moving the mouse OUTSIDE the cropped area and rotating the IMAGE c - to find tune and select what you want you can move the mouse INSIDE the cropped area and move the box around to select what you want or d - you can grab the cropped image by one of the little squares on its corners or sides and jiggle it around to fine tune the area you want to select after selecting the image you want hit ENTER to have photoshop actually crop the image ------------------------------------------------------ BRIGHTNESS adjustment remember on color tv you adjust the brightness of the image so it spans from 2.5% black to 100% black and you do the same thing for the color. here is how to adjust it for the photoshop image IMAGE ADJUST LEVELS now you have a BLACK ^ on one side and a white ^ on the other side drag the BLACK ^ to the right to the begining of the graph where color starts drag the WHITE ^ to the left to the begining of the graph where color ends click OK for the adjustments to take effect this tends to make image brighter COLOR adjustment (like to remove the RED from dr ray price face) LAYER NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER (now a box will pop up) their is a line that says TYPE:xxxxxxx its a scroll menu pick COLOR BALANCE to replace xxxxxxxx now hit OK and you get a new menu thats called COLOR BALANCE and you have 3 slider bars to play with the RGB you have click boxes to play with shadows midtones highlights when you done playing hit OK now is the kicker you get a new LAYERS menu in the COLOR BALANCE LAYER click on the EYE to see how the colors look WITH your changes turn the EYE off to see how the colors look BEFORE your changes FLATTEN THE STINKING IMAGE BEFORE SAVING IT ------------------------------------------------------ to replace color (LIKE REMOVE THE RED OUT OF dr rays prices face) (use the square tool to select the area to work in) IMAGE ADJUST REPLACE COLOR 1) now use the EYEDROPPER in the new box to select the INITIAL COLOR to change 2) use the EYE DROPPER + tool to ADD colors 3) use the EYE DROPPER - tool to DELETE colors (the stuff that WHITE in the NEW BOX will be changed) ok you selected what to changed now use the 3 slider bars in the TRANSFORM box to change the COLOR of the selected images to make the changes click on OK last SELECT DELECT ------------------------------------------------------ BRIGHTING COLORS - a big word is SATURATEing DULLING COLORS - a big word is DESATURATEing 1) select the SPONGE (use a feathered brush ) 2) double click on the SPONGE to get the tool plate 3) at the top select Desaturate - to DULL the colors Saturate - to BRIGHTEN the colors 4) pick a HEAVY pressure 90% to make it easy rub the sponge on stuff to bright or light it ------------------------------------------------------ DODGE tool works simular but brings out HILITES in an IMAGE DODGE tool LIGHTENS and DARKENS the image ------------------------------------------------------ to select an entire image so you can paste it else where (you can do it the same way gimp does) CNTL/C CNTL/V or SELECT - to select everything ALL EDIT - to copy everything selected into a buffer COPY EDIT - this adds a new layer PASTE (or to paste into an area you selected so it doesnt overlay everything but just overlays the selected stuff go) EDIT - this adds a new layer PASTE INTO (after adding the new layer you can move it around to get the effect you want) ------------------------------------------------------ playing with PEN's stinking pens they are like the things in gimp that draw lines but i dont remember the name. now i rember its the benzeer curves or however the fuck its spelled NOTE:!!!! you can convert ANY SELECTED AREA such as when selected with the MAGIC WAND COLOR GRABBER to a path by 1) selecting the stuff with the MAGIC WAND 2) made and rename it something from work path NOTE2: you can also convert ANY PATH into a SELECTED AREA you can later delete the selected area, copy the selected area, or play games with the selected area to convert the PATH into a selection 1) click on the PATH NAME in the PATH palette 2) PULL down the PATH NAME to the BIG CIRCLE at the bottom of the PATH palette and its converted it will now have the marching ants around it ------------------------------------------------------ the lines made with the pen tools are called PATHS you can later STROKE the PATHS like in GIMP to color them. or you can FILL a closed PATH with a SOLID COLOR or PATTERN like in GIMP you can have SEVERAL PATHS going at the same time to create a new PATH 1) go to the PATHS palette and click on NEW PATH 2) enter a name for the PATH 3) click on the PATH to make it the color BLUE so you can use it -------------------------------------- PATH can contain STRAIGHT LINES CURVED LINES STRAIGHT and CURVED lines to mask painting with BLACK removes holes in the stencil so you cant see through the stencil or layer. after you paint with BLACK you CANT MODIFY stuff below the layer mask painting with GREY makes the layer semi-transparent a layer mask is indicated in the LAYERS palette by a circle in a larger square icon. when this icon is active any thing you paint modifies the layer mask. to modify the actual layer click on the PHOTO in the layer palette and the circle in a larger square icon will be replaced with a PAINTBRUSH and you can modify the layers image to flip back and modify the layer mask again to the right of the photo is a box that shows what the layer mask looks like. click on that and you can modify the layer mask again by painting in black, white and grey if their is a CHAIN LINK in the
