MARTIN DEGVILLE
people wearing Degville creations
STRAIGHT UP  by i-D
Martin's creations were brilliant, considering he knew more about northern soul than pattern-cutting.  He would spend hours attacking rolls of gaudy Lycra which somehow ended up as dresses.  Pink with green sleeves, yellow slashes across the front, trimmed with marabou feathers or curtain fringe.  He was the Salvador Dali of fashion
In the autumn of 1979 Degville's Dispensary opened at Kensington Market in London.  the new shop was more successful than Oasis.  Martin cornered the market for people who wanted to look like Joan Collins crossed with Daffy Duck.   I  admired his commitment.  He sat on the sewing machine from Monday to Friday, then dragged sacks down to London and worked in the shop  all day Saturday.  He always made himself something ridiculous to wear,  a pink PVC catsuit that displayed the groceries and pulled up the crack of his arse, red ankle boots and fuchsia feather boa wrapped around his head.  Only Martin could carry off the look.  His customers looked like extras from Dr. Who
