And then there was Martin Degville himself, later to become well know first as a designer of outrageous one-offs, then as the singer of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. He was from Walsall, twelve miles outside Birmingham, and still lived there in a big two-storey flat at 79 Goodall Street, where George and his friends would sleep on their weekend visits. With his gaunt cheekbones, shaved eyebrows, high heels, wildly teased-up hairdos, and always dressed in his own extravagant ´ creations´ , Degville was already a legend in the small Birmingham club scene - and a magnet for skinheads and queer-bashers, from whom he frequently had to run for his life.
