Born at Kavala, Doğu Rumeli Vilâyeti, 1769, educated privately. Elected as Vali (Governor) by the Grand Council of Cairo 12 May 1805. Confirmed by Imperial Ottoman Firman on 9 July 1805. Masacred the Memluks at the Citadel in Cairo on 1 March 1811. Conquered the Sudan in 1822-23, and occupied Syria 1831-40.
His Highness founded the Mehmet Ali Paşa Külliyesi İmarethanesi at his birthtown Kavala.

Died at Alexandria on 2 August 1849. His corpse, escorted by 22 sheikhs reading verses of the Holy Quran was transferred to Ras-i Tin sarayi where it was draped in a Cashmir shawl, with his sword and Tunisian fez on top. Finally, he was buried at the Alabaster Mosque, in the Citadel of Cairo.

Wives & concubines
Mehmet Ali had two wives: Emine Hanim and, later on after her death, Mahduvran Hanim. He also had an unspecified number of kadinefendi, Ikbal and Gözde consorts and concubines.

Emine Hanim. Born at Nusretli, Doğu Rumeli Vilâyeti. She was the daughter of Nusretli (aka Misirli) Ali Ağa. Died in 1824, buried at Imam-i Şafii Türbesi in Cairo. Emine Hanim had 3 sisters: Miryem Hanim, Pakize Hanim, Ifet Hanim and two brothers: Mustafa Paşa and Ali Paşa. She was known in Hicaz as the "QUEEN OF THE NILE'


Children
Princess Tevhide Hanim. Born at Nusretli in 1787, she was the child of Emine Hanim's virginity 'Bikr Evladi' . Died at Alexandria in 1830.
HH Prince Ibrahim Paşa. Born at Nusretli in 1789. Died at Cairo on 10 November 1848 at 01:00 a.m. and was buried at the Imam-i Şafii Türbesi in Cairo eleven hours after his death.
HH Prince Ahmet Tosun Paşa. Born at Nusretli in 1793, died at Reşit on 29 September 1816. His corpse was transferred on the Nile to Cairo where he was buried 3 days later at the Imam-i Şafii Türbesi.
HH Prince Ismail Kamil Paşa. Born at Nusretli in 1798. Killed at Şindi, Sudan in 1822. Buried at Imam-i Şafii Türbesi.
Princess Hatice (aka Nazli) Hanim. Born at Nusretli in 1799. Died at Alexandria in August 1860. Buried at Nebi Danyal Türbesi in Alexandria, then reburied at the Imam-i Şafii Türbesi in Cairo.
