Generation No. 2

1. JOSHUA2 WHARTON (BARTLETT1) was born 1790 in Union Co, South Carolina, and died Abt. 1853 in Arkansas. He married (1) ELIZABETH Abt. 1813 in Tennessee. He married (2) NEELY Abt. 1824 in Tennessee. He married (3) MARY JANE MOONEY Abt. 1849.

Notes for JOSHUA WHARTON:
Legend---
Three Wharton brothers, Caleb, Joshua, and John, came to Madison County, Arkansas before 1832 from Stokes County, South Carolina.

The Goodspeed Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Arkansas states:
"Wharton's Creek--, the earliest settlers were Joshua Wharton, who with Joseph Fannin, were residents before 1832. It further states that "New Hope", a primitive Baptist Church at Kingston, was constituted February 12, 1832, by elders S. Wheet, William Poston and Berty Hachel, with Joshua Wharton and Neely Wharton among the ten members.

The 1840 Census of Madison County, Arkansas lists three Whartons, apparently brothers:
(1) CALEB WHARTON, head of family; Males: 1 - - 5-10; 1 - - 10-15; 1 - - 15-20; 1 - - 40-50; Females: 2 - - 5-10; 2 - - 10-15
(2) JOSHUA WHARTON; Males: 2 - - 5-10; 1 - - 10-15; 1 - - 50-60; Females: 2 - - 5-10; 1 - - 10-15; 1 - - 30-40
(3) JOHN WHARTON; Males: 2 under 5; 1 - - 30-40; Females: 1 - - 20-30.

The 1850 census is the last seen of Joshua Wharton.

10. 1850- Joshua living Mulberry, Johnson Co., Arkansas ( page 129}

I believe Joshua was married 3 times. His first wife may have been Elizabeth whom he married in Tennessee. There is children, Nancy, born 1815, Mary, Born 1818, and Caleb, born 1821. There was 6 years before any more children were born.

Neely Wharton is mentioned in 1832 Goodspeed Biographical of Arkansas. It is possible that Neely could be the 2nd wife. There are children from 1827 through 1836. I believe Joshua and Neely were also married in Tennessee and came to Arkansas together. The 1850 census of Johnson County, Ark. shows Joshua a young wife, Mary Jane, and a 4 month old baby. So I think Mary Jane may have been Joshua's 3rd wife.

According to Eugene Nicholson, his great-aunt Emma Boen stated that Joshua is buried in the Old Cemetery at Old Carrolton, Carroll Co, Arkansas.

L.D. Dunlap had guardianship of his brother-in-law, Caleb, until he decided to take his family to California. Custody then went to Caleb's other sister and her husband, Telitha and Robert Wilson.

Lorenzo's wife was Nancy Wharton, whose sister Mary married Lorenzo's brother Jesse Dunlap, Jr. Both families were a part of the Fancher Party, emigrating to California when they were victims of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, in Utah. Lorenzo, Nancy and their 6 older children were murdered by the mormons and the indians in a wagon train massacre, by treachery, with a white flag of truce carried by the mormon, John D. Lee, who promised them they would not be harmed. Only the two youngest daughters, Prudence Angeline, age 5, and Georgia Ann, age 18 months, survived. Notes for LOUISA DUNLAP:
Louisa was a survivor of the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

Louisa (pronounced loo-eye-za) was born 10 November 1853 and was the eighth of nine children of Mary (Wharton) and Jesse Dunlap, Jr. They were living in Johnson Co, Arkansas in May of 1857 when the family joined the prosperous Fancher Company wagon train, at Bellar's Station, Arkansas heading for California. One source states the train consisted of about forty wagons, several carriages in which the ladies rode, nearly a thousand head of cattle, and several hundred horses, including a stallion valued at $2,000, The wealth of the caravan was estimated at $70,000. There were about 120 men, women and children in this caravan, who became tragic victims of one of the largest, most brutal, massacre in American history.

This massacre occurred 11 September 1857 in Mountain Meadows of southern Utah, when Louisa was just a month less than four years old. Of this family, only the three youngest survived. These three little girls were cared for by the wife of Jacob Hamblin, a Mormon leader. These three Dunlap sisters, along with fourteen other children, remained in Mormon hands until March or April of 1859, They were then turned over to Dr. Forney, U.S. Indian agent, after the Mormons received payment form the government. According to Ralph R. Lee, James Lynch of the U.S. Army took possession of the seventeen surviving children and returned them to Ft. Leavenworth. In a sworn statement, James Lynch stated: "The children when we first saw them, were in a most wretched and deplorable condition; with little or no clothing, covered with filth and dirt. They presented a sight heart rending and miserable in the extreme". William Mitchell, who had lost three sons in the massacre, met them and transported the children to Carrollton, Arkansas. The 1860 Arkansas census shows Rebecca, Louisa and Sarah living in Carroll Co. with their uncle James D. and his wife Lucinda (McMurrey) Dunlap. Although Louisa apparently suffered no physical wounds, the mental scars were with her for the rest of her life. Her hatred of those responsible for the massacre was immense and enduring.

HEADLINE; SHOOTS WIFE AND SELF

Claude Dickerson slays his young wife near her home at Oark and turns gun on himself.

A double tragedy occured near Oark last friday morning about 10 O'clock, when Claude Dickerson, a young farmer living near there, shot his wife to death after which he turned the weapon on himself, dying two hours afterward. The couple had been married some three years and were the parents of one child, but their brief period of married life ended in a disagreement a few weeks ago after which the husband left for Oklahoma and his wife returned to her parents,Dr. and Mrs. C.P. Patterson of Oark and had been engaged in teaching school near the home. Dickerson returned from Oklahoma last friday however, and inquired for his wife and on being told that she was at the schoolhouse, set out to meet her.
He was seen near the road by an acquaintance who hailed him at which Dickerson displayed a revolver and bade his friend to move on, He met his wife a short distance from the village of Oark where the tragedy occured. The pistol shots attracted the attention of nearby residents who found the two in the dust. The wife was killed outright, but Dickerson lived several hours though not regaining consciousness. He is reported to have been 21 years of age and his wife 19.

Child of SARAH PATTERSON and CLAUDE DICKERSON is:
i. INFANT6 DICKERSON.
