My Grandfathers:

Richard Coleman was born Bef. 1620 in England and married Margaret Mascall. A historical marker has been erected in Essex County, Virginia on State Rt 17, north of Rappahanock, which states that Richard Coleman erected a trading post there in 1650. They have two known children: James Coleman married to Jane and Unknown Coleman married to Daniel Diskin.

John Critcher born Bef. 1646, married Jane Jadwin daughter of Robert Jadwin. John "Creecher" Critcher was described as "of Rappa: and parish of Famham" when he purchaced a parcel of land from John Sampson in 1677. The couple resided in North Famham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia. Their children: John, Jane and Cicely.

John Critcher born October 3, 1682, married Anne Benger. Their known children: Elenore, Richard, John, Jadwin, Anne, Mary, Thomas and Jean. John Critcher lost his father in 1693/94; his mother Jane married Edward Berry within a year of his father John Critcher's death. Shortly after her re-marriage, Jane Jadwin Critcher Berry died, leaving three young children with their step-father. In colonial Virginia a young man could not choose a guardian until he reached the age of 14 years of age. John chose his step-father Edward Berry as guardian in 1697; a decision which would prove to be unfortunate; and in 1700 John petitioned the court to appoint Richard Sparrow to be his guardian. Edward Berry apparently was not careful about his step-children's estates - John Critcher went to court several times to claim his due property from his step-father in 1703-5; only to fail. His sister Jane died about 1705; John was appointed her executor but could not complete his duties because of Edward Berry's poor handling of the estate. Cicely married William Butler, and he also had to sue Edward Berry for the estate due Cicely from her late father.

Edward Masterson was born abt 1706 and married Mary in Virginia. They had nine children: Edward, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Richard, William, Robert, and Thomas. The earliest record for Edward Masterson is his purchase of 150 acres of land in Essex County, Virginia on November 19, 1728. He sold the same land in 1735, but called himself of the county of Caroline. He was a millwright and grinder of grains by trade and he leased 300 acres of land on Four Mile Run in Fairfax County Virginia in 1745. The mill was located where Doctor's Creek merged with Four Mile Run, but the creek is now filled in. On Sept 25, 1751, he petitioned the Fairfax County court for permission to build a grist mill on Difficult Run. He wrote his will July 25, 1754, and called himself a millwright. It was presented to the court September 18, 1754 by his wife Mary and son Edward. In it he names his nine children.

Edward Masterson was born bef 1730 in Fairfax County, Virginia. He married Mary Coleman bef 1752. He had eleven children and may have been married twice (from the large age differences in his family). His children are: James, Calib, Leah, Sarah, Winnifred, Delilah, Lazarus, Jane, Lennah, William and Mary. Edward was a trooper in the French & Indian War, 1755-1756, when he served with the Fairfax County Virginia militia. He was listed in the "House of Delegates Journal" 1777-80 as having gone in defense of people in outlying Virginia. There are a series of three land patents issued in 1768 and 1770, for Edward to acquire 1100 acres of land in Dobbs County, North Carolina. He moved to Johnston County, North Carolina before 1777; and served as a leiutenant in the militia there. Court-martial papers were issued for him in Johnston County, North Carolina in 1777; and he was supoenaed to court in Oct 1787 in Dobbs County, North Carolina; but the supoena was returned to the January court by the sheriff - 'not to be Found' - Edward Masterson probably died in Wayne County, North Carolina before January 12, 1788, when the estate of Edward Masterson, dec'd, was attached for the court cost; and on April 20, 1790 a court order in Wayne County, North Carolina was issued for the distribution of his Estate. He inherited a negro called 'Tom' from his father Edward in 1754. In the inventory of the estate of Edward Masterson of North Carolina, the first negro listed is 'Tom".

They had eight children: Mary Jane, Caroline, Elizabeth, Charles C, Martin Jr, Charlotte, Samuel S and William Harrison. Some genealogies of this family claim that Martin married Delilah Dowing, and he is buried (with wife Delilah) in the Wymore-Downing cemetery. It is clear from the receipt signed for the share of Edward Mastersons' estate that Martin Wymore was the husband of Delilah Masterson, daughter of Edward and ward of James Masterson (her older brother) as of the date of that receipt. Whether Martin had a susbsequent wife Delilah who was a Downing has not been determined.
