WINTER> Germany> New Orleans, LA> Warren Co., MO
My German origins are from the old province of Lippe from a small town in the N.E. part called Bosingfeld. My great grandfather, Simon Ernst Winter, (b. 1825) left as a young lad for New Orleans, sailed up the Missippi R. for St. Louis and settled in Warren Co., MO
Does this connect with your family?
The patriarch
of the family (my son's 4G-grandfather) appears to be
GABRIEL
WINTER, born in Holland around 1720. I don't know when he arrived
in New York or who his parents were, but at some point, he married DEBORAH
STILLWELL, also born around 1720, of Middleton, NJ.
Their son, JOSEPH STILLWELL WINTER (my son's 3G-grandfather) was born in 1757 in New York. In 1776, he was an Aide de Camp to General Washington and was given the privilege of reading the Declaration of Independence to the people of New York as the Britch Flag was being lowered. He married MARY PRINCE (no other information). They are both buried at Trinity Church on the southern tip of Manhattan.
Their son, JAMES FELIX WINTER, (my son's 2G-grandfather) was born around 1820 in Warrenton, GA (could be spelled wrong). On 18 Nov. 1849, he married CAROLINE VICTORIA COMER of Vineville, Macon, GA somewhere in Bibb County, GA. From what I've learned, the COMER family was rather "high society", but I know nothing more about them.
They had 9 children, one of whom was my son's G-grandfather, WILLIAM BANKS WINTER (also known as BANKS WINTER), born 8 Feb 1857 in Vineville, Macon, GA. He was a well-known minstrel and showman on the Orpheum circuit. He wrote a song entitled "White wings" that netted him more than $500,000 in roytalities by the time he died in 1936. He married CLARA DUMMING NEWMAN of Huntsville, AL in June, 1887.
BANKS and CLARA had three children - WINONA (who followed her father's footsteps onto the Broadway stage), COMER, and WILLIAM BANKS WINTER, JR., my son's grandfather. He was born in New York on 29 Jan 1901.
I have no idea what happened to CLARA, but she may have died when my son's grandfather was very young. I'd like to find out when and where she died and where she is buried.
If anyone has any information on any of these families, I would LOVE to hear from you!

WINTER> Illinois
My great grandmother was Monora Bell (Winter) Durre. She was born 27 April 1874 I believe in Illinois, and died in 1949. She is buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Edgewood, Illinois. She married Edward Walter Durre on 26 October 1898.
Nora's parents were A. Frank Winter born 1 Dec 1848 and died 19 Aug 1921. He married Irma or Irene Lawton who died in her 20's while Nora was still young.
Nora's grandparents raised her, per the census she lived with them not her father. Their names were Samuel Winter(s) born 12 Nov 1817 in Fairfield County, Ohio and married Mary Jane Turner on 5 Sept 1842 in Effingham County, Illinois They both are said to be buried in the Tuner Cemetery in Jackson Township, Effingham County, Illinois. (I am going later this month to search for this cemetery and make pictures of the gravestones if I can find them!) Samuels father was Benjamin who I have been told was born in 1790. He was a farmer and owned a farm, 50 acres, I think near Mount Vernon, Ohio. He died 5 April 1832 and was buried in Baltimore, Ohio. Sam and Mary Jane had 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls according to an article regarding their 50th wedding anniversary, I am sure I have many pictures of their children and grandchildren, but do not have the information as to exact names/dates/etc.....but am trying to find them out!!! (Just came accross a paper listing some of the children...
Elizabeth who died in infancy, Caroline Hardsock wife of Elza Hardsock, James B, Frank, Walter, William, Mary E. who died at age of 3...Guess that is all of them! As of March 14, 1902, Mary Jane had 5 children still living, 24 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren still living!)
According
to my father, most of the Winter children had jobs with the
railroad.
I am
willing to share copies of the photos I have with any relatives
located!!!
Am excited to hear any stories to go with these long lost
faces!
Will share any info I have.
I do
not know if A. Frank ever married again or what other children he
and
Irene Lawton shared.
Hope
I haven't bored you or overdone the info. But thanks for
listening/reading.
Hopefully,

WINTER> Blount Co, TN> ?> Montgomery Co, MO
This is my first entry so I am going to outline the three generations that I do have.
Samuel and Charity Winter had a son named Sterling Winter born September 2, 1813. I don't know where this data came from so I cannot verify this date or his parents names. This is a possibility though.
I do know that Sterling Winter married Dicy Birdwell (born February 21, 1815) on January 12, 1834 in Blount Co, Tennessee. I found this on the Blount Co web page. I also found a marriage there in 1832 for a Samuel Winters, my thought is that it could be Sterling's brother. Dicy's family is a long branch that extends back to Virginia so it is possible these were families that traveled a similar path.
Sterling and Dicy Winter were living in Missouri by 1846, as this is where my direct ancestor, their daughter, Belle Winter was born. Here is a list of their kids.
1-Mary Jane Winter Feb 11, 1835-
2-John

3-Joshua
Birdwell Winter April 10, 1839-
married
Lutitia Numley (5 kids)
4-Nannie
Ann Winter Dec 18, 1841-

John Ellis
5-Sterling Edward Winter May 7, 1844-
6-Isabella
"Belle" Hutton Winter Dec 24, 1846 Montgomery Co, MO-Dec 26,
1928
in Yolo co, CA married John Martin jr. Nov 18, 1872 Mongomery Co, MO
7-Samuel Wright Winter May 7, 1849-
8-Martha Elizabeth Winter April 7, 1851-
9-Franklin Pierce Winter Dec 30, 1858-Oct 18, 1876
This is the basics I have on the family. I have the line of Belle and John Martin extended down to present. I am interested in tracing the Winters back and finding other relatives of this line. Please contact me if you have any questions!

South Dakota> Willamette Valley in Oregon
My great grandmother was Sarah Winter (so named on her birth certificate 3-Sep-1839 from Upper Bern Township, Berks County PA.) Her father was Benjamin Winter; her mother was Maria Gellinger. Sarah married my great grandfather, Samuel Faust, december 21, 1861. They had four sons, Adam, Franklin, Benjamin and Samuel and one daughter, Mary. They moved to West Hanover Township, Dauphin Cpounty PA in 1870/71. Family stories indicate they may have moved to North or South Carolina late 1870's or 1880's. I do know they moved to South Dakota and along with the eldest son, Adam, took up homesteads. In 1890 they moved to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I believe that Sarah's brother, John Winter, married Samuel Faust's sister, Sarah. In my book "Faust/Foust Family In Germany and America" it states that Sarah was buried in Belleman's. I am not sure, but I think this is a Pennsylvania cemetery and perhaps John Winter is also buried there. I am not sure this will be of any help to other Winter family researchers. I certainly have not been able to get beyond this point.
Any help would be appreciated.

have any of this information. If Uncle was here he could tell us
and
pull out a record from his research but he sold or gave away most of
the
research on the Ball Family which would have included this
connection.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

My main object at present is to establish the link between the Winter family and the Greed family. Both of these families were situated in West Somerset (England), largely in the Parishes of Carhampton, Withycombe and possibly East Quantoxhead. Family legend has it that a George Greed (possibly of East Quantoxhead) married a Mary Winter (of Withycombe), this wedding occurring sometime in the period 1860 - 1870. Mary was a daughter of Thomas & Hannah Winter and was born about 1843 - 1844. Thomas & Hannah had several other children, Elizabeth Jane, James and Eliza born during the period 1849 -1858.
I am
also interested in any information on the names Peppin, Blackmore
&
Northcombe.
My grandfather was Fred Peppin, killed in 1917 aged 24 and buried outside Arras in France. He was the son of Isaac & Caroline Peppin of Watchet. On 10th April1910, he married Emma Jane Blackmore, who was born 31st January 1887.
Walter Francis Northcombe married Eliza Winter, in Bristol, in 1880.
I hope this makes some sense and that someone out there can help me fill in the gaps.
Thanks!
