WINTERS QUERIES Page One
1. Marcy A. Porter
Need parents of Norma WINTERS, b 1900-1902, Texas, probably Atascosa County. In 1908, her grandmother, Sallie KELSO NEILL, appeared in court in Atascosa County TX to apply for guardianship of her own two minor sons (husband B. F. NEILL d 1897), and Norma WINTERS, her grandaughter. Sallie stated at that time that both of Norma's parents were dead. Believe Norma's mother was Maude NEILL, but I can't find a marriage for Maude and Mr. Winters. Need his name, as well. Did Norma marry?

A census search for my WINTERS line turned up the following-- Samantha Ann Winters (maiden name was Jones according to my father). She was the widow of William Winters of Talbotton Ga., according to her obit. She was born c. 1849 in GA, was living in Newnan, GA in 1880 with her sister Nancy Hawkins and her two children, Hattie (9yrs) and Susan (7yrs). Samantha and Nancy were both listed as widows, occupation dress makers. The census index for 1870 showed no WINTERS in Coweta Co. Marriage records for Coweta Co. turned up nothing but I plan to search neighboring counties. If anyone is searching a WINTERS line in GA I'd like to get in touch with them.
Thanks!
I am looking for any information about John M. Winters, the second husband of my g-g-grandmother, Amanda Joyce (Williams) Beshears. John and Amanda were married 22 May 1905 in Waldron, Scott Co., AR. Amanda was born 8 Jul 1852 in MO or NC, and died 14 Feb 1925 in Scott Co., AR. According to the marriage license, John was 43 when he and Amanda married, which would place his year of birth in about 1862.
There were no children from John and Amanda's marriage, but John had at least one daughter, Bertha, by a previous marriage.
Apparently John died before Amanda, as Amanda was living in the home of her son Jim and his second wife Mattie at the time of her death. It is presumed that John is buried somewhere in or near Scott Co., AR, but his date of death and place of burial is unknown.
Any information about John M. Winters will be greatly appreciated.

I have two Winter's brothers Joe and WA who where in the foster care of my g-great Aunt and Uncle Mack and Sally Hayes of Bio community in Hart Co., GA circa 1915/25. Joe lived and died (1942) as a Hayes but WA, I'm not sure and I was told he died about 1945 in the Army. He was married and lived in or around Greenville SC. I was also told they were the youngest from a very big family of about 13 children. Would like to know more about the Winters family and what WA's name really was. Did he also take the Hayes name? Where is he burried? What became of the other children?

I am looking for information on my great-grandmother who was a Winters. Her name was Imogene Winters and I believe that she came from northern Illinois (Rockford or DeKalb as I recall). She married Dr. Abraham Bertolet Rosenberry and had one child born in northern Wisconsin near Arbor Vitae. She was my grandmother-Imogene Bertolet Rosenberry. She was born on August 3,1886 Her mother died in December of that year. If anyone could give me or direct me to any information I would be very appreciative.

WINTERS> Dauphin Co., and in Liverpool, PA
My research has shown that my gggrandparents were:
Joseph Winters 11/13/1811 to 7/27/1869 and his wife Elizabeth Mentzer 10/17/1813 to 3/13/1869
Their daughter Louisa was my ggrandmother. My records show that they lived in Pennsylvania--Dauphin County and in Liverpool. They had a son Isiah that died in the Civil War. They also had another son named Joseph A. Winters.
Joseph A. Winters was born in c. 1843, and lived In Pennsylvania in the 1880's. In 1913, Joseph was living at 1335 Susquehanna, Harrisburg, PA. He was Louisa's guardian after the death of her husband. I have a letter written by him in the 1880’s. He was attempting to establish Louisa as the widow of a Civil War veteran so she could receive his pension. At that time she was living in an asylum and he could no longer afford to pay for her expenses.
Do these people match up with anybody else's Winters?
I have been moving down a path that would make the father of Dallas Winters of Indiana the son of a Miami Indian. I'm forced down this path by the absence of Dallas in the census data for the states surrounding his birthplace and by a rumor in the family that there was an Indian in our Winters line. In any case, I have recently purchased a book, "The Miami Indians of Indiana" by Stewart Rafert, and have found within a picture of the "1880's Miami Indian Band." To my surprise no less than four of the thirteen people (nine are Indians) in the picture are Winters - Robert, James, Frank and William. All look to be under 30 years of age in the photo making birth dates after 1850 and anyone of which could be a father to Dallas.
I also have come into some information that suggests that a Joseph Winters married a Louise Miller, both of the Miami tribe. This union's offspring were the first persons buried in the Indian Cemetery of Union Baptist Church, Grant County, IN.
The Winters in this cemetery are:
- Amanda Catherine, dau of Joseph & Louiza Winters, d: May 10, 1865 aged 5 mths
- Elizabeth Margaret, dau of L. & J. Winters, d: July 3, 1873 aged 3 years
- Joseph, son of Joseph and Louiza Winters, d: 27 Dec. 1877 aged 4 mths 20 days
- Sarah, d: Sept. 1878 aged 70 years
- [Note that this information was listed by the DAR and in the book "Lest We Forget" by Cora Straughn.]
The list suggests that a Winters was in the tribe as early as 1808. The Miller name probably comes from a known trader who was involved with the Miami much earlier. He probably married into the tribe. The Winters name may have been selected by the Baptist minister or by the Chief. In any case, the cemetery contains only Indians so it is clear that there were Winters among the Miami.I have no problem accepting the possibility of my Winters name originating within the Miami. I do have a problem proving it. Have you associated the Winters name with the Miami before? As it turns out the Miami were forced by custom to marry outside their family group so, in the 1800's lots of other ethnic groups were married into.
As a reminder, here is my tree:

My Winters connection comes through my maternal grandmother, and I have back to 1748. We have a large Winter's Family file (I think) with 2292 individual included. Most of mine moved to the South Texas area in the 1830's and were involved in fighting the Mexican's from the Alamo to San Jacinto. Several towns were named after the different Winters descendants. Gradually I've been able to get some ocuments verifying some of the stories I heard as a child growing up in South Texas. I guess the bad thing about this is the more you find the more loose or dead ends there are.I have quite a bit of information on several of these children. If you could help in any way I would be willing to share what information I have with you.

My gg grandmother Sarah Jane BETTES or BETIS's sister Mary BETTES married James M WINTERS as a second husband, her first husband Jacob BILLYOU having died. and they had three children Loretta b: 1853, Almira Catherine b: 1855, and William N b: 1857. All were born in Murray township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada.
I am looking for descendents of this family. Do they look at all familiar?

My great-great-great grandparents were Henry Winters and Nancy McWilliams. Their tombstones are at Upper Canada Village. Their son Cyrus was my great-great grandfather. He and Julia were the parents of Benjamin, who married Etna (Edna) Busch. (originally Busche) Their children, as I noted, were Alice, Minnie, Herbert, Cersey (Kerry?), Etna, Simon and "Byrdie" or Sarah. The latter was my grandmother, who died in childbirth. Her only son was Lyndon Thompson, my father.
I am looking for information about the children of Ben and Etna and their descendents. These children were raised in Osnabruck Centre (between Cornwall and Brockville just a few km. north of the St. Lawrence River). I know that Simon was a lay adventist preacher in Osnabruck and in Brockville. He apparently later went to Carleton Place or Arnprior. Generally, the family seem to have stayed in northern N.Y. or the Ottawa Valley.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Seeking pars of Norma WINTERS, b abt 1900. In 1908, her g-mother Sallie KELSO NEILL, widow of Benjamin F. NEILL, entered a proceeding in the courts of Atascosa County, Texas, asking to be named the guardian of her own two minor children, and Norma WINTERS, also a minor. Sallie stated in the guardianship application that Norma was her granddaughter, and that both of Norma's parents were dead. Norma's age is given variously as six years and eight years in the same proceding, so her birth date could have been anywhere from 1899 to 1903, I think. I have marriages for all of Sallie's daughters who survived to adulthood, except the eldest, Maude, so I believe that Maude may have been Norma's mother. Norma appears in Sallie's household at the 1910 census, but by 1920, Sallie is living in a son's household, and Norma is not in evidence. I don't know if Norma/Noma went to live with some Winters relatives, married or died between 1910 and 1920. I am trying to write the history of the Neill family in Texas, and I just feel this girl needs to be discovered again.
Any info on Norma would be appreciated, including any marriages and children. I have hit a wall with this young lady. Thanks.
