The Burns Avenue School opened for classes during the 1952-53 school year. Katherine Kienast (Gagnon) and Linda Fichter (Bennett) who both grew up on Schiller Street and started kindergarten that year report they attended Nicholai Street School at the beginning of the year and then transferred to Burns Avenue School when it opened.

Above: The first afternoon kindergarten class. The 1952-53 school year’s kindergarten children were the first to attend classes K thru 6 at the new school.
