Joan Whitaker Landrum has done extensive research on the lineage of Jonathan WHITAKER. She is a descendent of Eliphalet WHITAKER, and has included the following summary of her research on this Whitaker line: Jonathan Whitaker was born c. 1690-95 and died in 1763 in Somerset Co, New Jersey. He married c. 1722 Elizabeth Jervis b.1696 d. 1764. Sources vary in their information about his origin. Ephraim Seward Whitaker said that he believed Jonathan to be the descendant of John Whitaker of Watertown, Massachusetts, who had sons John b. 1662 and Jonathan b.1664. A descendant Oscar Vorhees said that Jonathan Whitaker was born in Wiltshire, England. Another descendant believed that he came from Brampton, Cumberland Co, England. He appeared in Huntington, Long Island, New York about 1722. He and Elizabeth joined the Presbyterian Church there in 1724, and there his children were born and baptized. He moved to Somerset Co., N.J. where he built his home that is still standing. Eliphalet Whitaker, his son, head of my line, removed to Georgia c. 1790 and his descendants again moved west to Taladega Co., Al.c.1840 and from there to Cherokee Co., Texas in 1871. Jonathan Whitaker's sons were Jonathan Whitaker, Jr., Isaac Whitaker, Rev. Nathaniel Whitaker, and Eliphalet Whitaker. 2.) He moved to Bedford, Coshocton County Ohio about 1828. My second paternal great grandfather, Reuben BARKER WHITAKER (Jr.) was b. February 24, 1841 in Bedford, Coshocton County Ohio. Reuben BARKER WHITAKER (Jr.) m. Jane MCGRUDER (m. October 14, 1868 in Coshocton County, Ohio. Jennie or Jane MAGRUDER (in some places spelled MAGRUDER) is listed in one source as being from West Carlisle, Ohio. Reuben BARKER WHITAKER (Jr.) served in Company H of the 51st. Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, being wounded in the battle of Stone's River (Murfreesboro) Tennessee on January 2, 1863. Serving until November 1865 when he was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. Sarah Whittaws/Whitacre) Proctor d. 26 Jan 1752 (name spelled Procotter) aged 83 years 8 months (grave stone), so she was born about May 1668 (not 1688 as you now show). I have no antecedents for her. The only other Whitaker record in the Chelmsford VRs is a marriage of a Jonathan Whittaker to Sarah Toothaker at Boston Nov. 15, 1694. Whether this was a brother or possibly the father of Sarah marrying another time, I have no way of knowing. Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England states that John Whittaker of Watertown removed to Billerica and "was perhaps of Chelmsford 1691". Another source says he went to Dracut from Watertown. John Whittaker of Watertown and his w. Elizabeth had a dau. Sarah b. at Watertown in 1666. Whether that daughter died and they later had another of same name in 1668 is not yet known. The children of Gershom and Sarah (Whittaws/Whittaker) Proctor were: Gershom, Jonathan, Sarah, Nathan, Hannah, Ebenezer, Janet, Israel and Esther. Notice their second eldest son's name: Jonathan. That son traditionally would have been named for the wife's father. 27.) James George Whitaker is researching the line of Godfrey Whitecar who's first recorded details were his marriage to Elizabeth Baker in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England in 1683 followed by their son also Godfrey and the following in turn, Edward,Edward,Edward,William Butler Whitaker,George Edward Whitaker Charles Brewster Whitaker, James George Whitaker, and myself James George Whitaker (2) names associated with my whitakers are Baker,Watson, Fortune Godfrey, Ann Watson, Ann Tatton, Ann Butler, Mary Ann Brewster,Betsy Newton, Annie Elizabeth Thorp, also connected are Todd, Shaw, all in the Nottinghamshire area but around the later part of 1800s some were in Manchester Lancashire, England. 84.) Phyllis Winthurst is
looking for additional information on the children of Joseph Whitaker (Abt.
1775-1820) and his wife Catherine Merkle/Marchal. It is believed
they married in Chester County, Pennsylvania and moved to Bedford County,
Pennsylvania around 1813. He first appears in Bedford County witnessing
a will for a Jacob Sink on 13 September 1813; in 1814 he appears on the
tax rolls for St. Clair Township with the occupation of chairmaker.
His brother Reuben appears on the 1810 Bedford County census and for a
while was working as a chairmaker and later an innkeeper before the moved
his family to Ohio. Joseph Whitaker died before the 1820 census was
taken, leaving about 12 children under the age of 20 for his wife to raise.
A couple of those children were raised by a Quaker couple, Thomas and Rachael
Griffith. My great x 2 grandmother Margaret G. Whitaker and her brother
Henry, two of the youngest, appear to have spent time in their household.
When Margaret married Philip Gooden, they named their first son Thomas
Griffith Gooden, to honor the family who had given them care. Margaret,
her son, and Henry Whitaker were all left money in Rachel Griffith's will.
Information taken from a piece of paper tucked into a Gooden family Bible
gives the following as children of Joseph and Catherine: Thomas, b. 1803;
Hiram, b. 1807; Edward, b. 1809; Rachael, no b. year given; Merkle, b.
1811; Harriett, b. 1813; Henry, b. 1814; Margaret, b. 1816; Reuben, b.
1818. There are indications of at least three more children who do
not appear on the Bible list - two more females born before 1810
(from census records) and a son William Lewis, b. abt. 1817, (from Bedford
Orphan Court records). Hiram, Edward, and Merkle are also in the Orphan
Court records regarding guardianship after they reached the age of 14.
Even though Margaret listed her parents on an 1882 marriage license application
as Joseph Whitaker and Catherine "Myrtle" (instead of Merkle or Marchal),
I have strong suspicions that she didn't go by the name Catherine but may
have used the name "Harriett." This name appears over and over again
in the descendants of this family, but I have yet to find a "Catherine"
in the grandchildren's names. According to an abstract from the Bedford
Gazette newspaper, a widow,
