Through research, I have found that there was a split in the McAferty family many years ago, and some changed the spelling to McAferty, while the others retained the original spelling of McCafferty. If you have any information, please email me.
John McAferty (Born 1806 in Ohio. Died 1850 in Linn Co., Iowa. Information from the 1850 census shows he was born in Ohio and that he was a farmer of 44 years.) Married Luticia (no last name) most likely in Linn Co., Iowa. She was born in 1811 in Virginia. 1850 census shows her in Ohio at age 39 in Scioto County (?).Their children were: 1. James McAferty* (Born 10-20-1830 in Linn Co., Iowa. However, the 1850 census shows him being born in Ohio. He was in Ohio in 1850 and is listed as being a farmer. Died 3-27-07 in Soldier, Kansas) Married Elma Jane Wilcox (1833 - 1883). Click here for their children.*James McAferty married for a second time to Margaret Ryan (1899 - ?). Margaret's headstone reflects the spelling of McCafferty, unlike how James and his first wife spelled it. No children that I am aware of.2. Elizabeth McAferty, born 1831 in Ohio. 1850 census shows her living in Ohio.3. Benjamin Franklin McAferty, born 1835 in Illinois. 1850 census shows him as being born in Illinois, but living in Ohio at 15 years of age.4. Mary McAferty, born 1837 in Illinois.5. William McAferty, born in 1839 in Iowa. 1850 census shows him being born in Iowa, and still living there at age 11.6. Francis Marion McAferty (b. 3-19-1841, Marion Co., Iowa. d. 6-10-1915 in Algona, King Co., WA. Buried in Mt. View Cemetary, Auburn, WA. Occupation was carpenter. Census shows he was in Marion County when he was nine years old. Married Rachel Friend on 8-4-1861. Rachel was born 11-2-1843 in Adair, Iowa. Died 11-21-1920 in Algona, WA., King County.
