MATTHEW MIDYETT, PATRIARCH OF THE EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA MIDYETT FAMILY

The Hyde County Genealogy Society has abstracted the following data from a much larger study provided by Alton W. Payne, a native of Gull Rock, Hyde County, N.C. The study in its entirety, may be seen at the society's library at the home of Betty S. Mann, Fairfield, N. C. To simplify our indexing process, we have spelled the surname MIDYETT in a consistent manner throughout this article.

MATTHEW MIDYETT, the son of John (b.c. 1639) and Catherine____ Midyett, was born 10 April 1676 in James City County, Bristol Parish, Va. Matthew, a ships carpenter or boatwright, moved to Anne Arundel Co., MD, prior to 1699. He plied his trade as ships carpenter in the shipyard at London Town which is a short distance southwest of Annapolis. On 13 July 1702, Matthew Midyett of Little Neck, Md., Married Judith White (b. 3 August 1681), daughter of Samuel White of Covewell, Anne Arundel County, MD. These facts are supported by the Bible Record of Thomas Midyett, the 1703 Anne Arundel Co. Will of Samuel White, and Anne Arundel Co. court records.

By 1704, Matthew began having legal difficulties in Anne Arundel County, Md., and these difficulties plagued him even after he had removed to N. C. circa 1707. His name appears in Chowan Precinct,N>C. records on 30 June 1711 when he commanded one of Governor Edward Hyde's boat in pursuit of Emanuel Low. The Colonial Records of 1712 indicate that Matthew Midyett was allowed fifty pounds for apprehending Emanuel Low who had been accused of sedition and rebellion against the government.

According to dates contained in the Thomas Midyett Bible and the Maryland court records, the first two of Matthew and Judith Midyett's children were probably born in Anne Arundel County, Md.-Samuel Midyett (b.6 Dec. 1704, d. Bodies Island, N. C. 29 Jan. 1780) who married Mary Paine of Anne Arundel County, Md. on 8 June 1723, and John Midyett (b. 10 Feb. 1707, d. Bodies Island, N.C. during an August storm in 1735) who married Sarah Paine (sister of his brother Samuel's wife) of Anne Arundel County, Md., On 1 May 1728.

Matthew Midyett began receiving North Carolina Land Patents as early as 1712 when he patented 341 acres on the south side of Albemarle Sound, commonly known as White Oak Island. In the same year he patented 360 acres on the north-west side of "Alegator Creek in Chowan Precinct." On 15 January 1715, he patented 1,500 acres on the south shore of Albemarle Sound and in 1717 patented 200 acres in Currituck Precinct on the sand banks, south of Roanoke Inlet. Two more patents are found for Matthew Midyett, one in 1722 for 80 acres which was described as "an Island commonly called Bodyes Island," and another patent in 1727 for 1,900 acres "being the Sea bank and all the Marsh adjoining to it Commonly called Cow and Bodys Island... the length of the whole being 9-1/2 miles and the mean breadth 100 poles."

After moving to North Carolina, Matthew and Judith Midyett had: Ann Midyett (b. 16 May 1709) who married George Pugh on 22 April 1732; Joseph Midyett, Sr. (b 30 March 1712, d. 1771 at Chickamicomico, Currituck Co. NC.) who married Elizabeth Margery Neal on 3 Aug. 1730; Matthew Midyett (b 16 April 1715) who was shipwrecked and lost on the Virginia Cape during the January storm of 1739; Catherine Midyett 9b 10 Oct. 1716) who married Ezekiel Hooper on 2 July 1736; Thomas Midyett 9b. 14 Nov. 1717, d. circa 1786-88) who married Bethaney (Bannister ?) circa 1737; Judith Midyett of Bodies Island (b 12 Aug. 1719) who married William Daniels on 30 Sept. 1738; and Diana Midyett (b. 10 June 1721) who married Thomas Morris on 19 July 1740. Matthew Midyett died on Bodies Island, Currituck Precinct, NC. on 25 Dec. 1734, and his wife Judith died at Bodies Island on 26 Sept. 1744.

Matthew and Judith Midyett's son Joseph Midyett, Sr. was the first Midyett to own land in Hyde Co. On 26, July 1742, he patented 100 acres on Mattamuskeet described as "joining on the north side of Wappoin Creek, the Dismal, the marsh, and a pocoson." Joseph and his wife Eliazbeth Margery Midyett moved to Wapopin Creek between 1746 and 1756, however, they apparently returned to the Banks by 1758 as his name appears as a member of Captain Jacob Farrow's company of Currituck Militia.

Joseph Midyett, Sr. and wife Elizabeth Margery sold their 100 acre patent on the north side of Wapopin Creek to Henry Gibbs, Sr. on 15 Dec. 1757. The deed included all houses, orchards, fences, etc.

Joseph, Sr. and Elizabeth Margery Midyett had: Joseph Midyett, Jr. (b. 1731, d. 1778) who married Angelico O'neal: John Midyett (b. 1733, d.c. 1789-91) who married Christian_____; Matthew Midyett (b. 1734) who married Bethaney O'Neal; Richard Midyett (b. 1736); Christopher Midyett (b. 1738); youngest son George Midyett; and daughter Christian Midyett.

Joseph Midyett, Jr.'s wife, Angelico O'Neal Midyett, was a major legatee in the 6 Feb. 1803 Will of Joshua Walls of Hyde Co. After his death in 1805, Angelico O'Neal Midyett was to have the use of his house and orchard during her life. In addition, she received most of his goods and chattles for life and then they were to pass to her daughter Marcy Midyett. Joshua Walls' house is the home of the late Ione O'Neal of Gull Rock, presently owned by Gertrude Pugh Jakeman. (Editor's note: Joshua Walls' intentions are not clear with regard to his house as he did not designate to whom it should gol upon the death of Angelico O'Neal Midyett. He did, however, leave William O'Neal "all land that I am now possessed with" which could have included the house.
