George Varnham was among the earliest settlers of Ipswich, MA. He came over from England among the Puritan emigrants who early settled Salem and Ipswich, who are distinguished from the Pilgrims who settled at Plymouth. With him came his wife Hannah and their children, Samuel and Hanna, Samuel being about 16 and Hannah next in age. He was a Puritan who emigrated from England in 1635 (These were called the Salem Puritans as differenciated from the Plymouth Puritans of 1620. The word Pilgrim was invented 100 years later) ! John Bowers of Chelmsford conveyed to Thomas, John and Joseph VARNUM 500 acres of the Wamasett Purchase, bounded by the Merrimack River on the south and Beaver Brook on the East. On 3/4/1711, Joseph and Ruth VARNUM convey to John VARNUM one third of 340 acres, bounded by the Merimack River on the South, Capt. Sewell's land on the West, Long Pond on the North "Colburne"'s farm on the East and South-east. On 7/29/1712, Thomas, John and Joseph VARNUM divide up lands purchased by their father Samuel VARNUM, Capt. Webb and Thomas Richardson (see below) bounded on the North side by Old Meadow Brook. On 10/29/1713, Thomas and John VARNUM convey to Joseph VARNUM land bounded on the North side of the Merrimack River, Joseph's farm on the West, except 100 acres of the 500 acres that was already owned by Joseph from a parcel sold to him by John "COLEBURN". The Rowley Historical Society now owns the house he lived in on Main Street, the Platts-Bradstreet House, where he and his second wife lived. They had purchased it from Joseph Jewett. "One dwelling house and 7 3/4 acres of plowland lying of joining to the above said dwelling house". Ipswich Deeds, a small portion of this land was part of the lot laid out to William Bellingham. B. LT. ABEL PLATTS. Born in England and the son of Samuel and Sarah. Lt. Abel was the first of the Platts to settle in Rowley. He was a rebel and in considerable trouble with the town fathers. He was a soldier and a colorful character (see Platts family story). He was an ensign in the Rowley Company of the Canadian Expedition. At the time of his appointment as ensign, objection was made by the two ministers of Rowley for reasons set forth in their letter to the General Court accusing him of not taking communion or showing proper respect for religion. He was Rowley's first shipbuilder. Abel appears to have been a rebel who chafed under the strict Puritan church. He was excommunicated from the church. He went off to fight the French at Quebec in 1690 and died of exposure and starvation at Cape Breton. His heirs appealed for redress and were granted land in New Hampshire to which his grandson, Captain Abel moved and settled, calling this town 'Rowley, Canada'. The name was later changed to Rindge. He commenced clearing land as early as 1742 and started a permanent residence in the 1750's upon the shores of Pool Pond. His lots were 16 and 17 in the 8th range. B. England Md. MOSES. Son of Abel and Lydia. He is recorded as serving as selectman in 1717. In 1734 he was employed by the town in settling the boundaries of Plum Island, Mass. He charged the town "for three days at Plum Island and one quart of 'Rume 0-14-0'". About 1750 he appears to have owned a store in Rowley. B. February 4, 1673 Md. CAPT. ABEL. Son of Moses and Hannah. He was known as Capt. Abel Platts. He was granted unsettled land in Rindge, NH for the service of his father in the war.He was a 'chainman' and in 1738 he proceeded to this area which was called Rowley, Canada. He is credited with being the first settler, which was incorporated as the town of Rindge, NH. in 1768. He is called the 'father of the town', and his wife was the first woman settler. B. February 6, 1703 in Rowley, Mass Md. Mary Varnum on April 21, 1725 (see Varnum Family) b. 1705, d. Date unknown. She is buried on the farm at Pool Pond. Hannah. Daughter of Capt. Abel and Mary. B. January 13, 1741 in Lunenburg, MA. Md. Ezekiel Jewett on June 16, 1759. From this union came the Jewetts, Pipers, Brookses and Stearnses. Eventually, it led back to the Plattses, for Hannah's great-granddaughter, Julia Stearns, married Abel's great-grandson, Charles F. Platts, thus converging two direct lines. 6.

ASA. He was the fourth child of Abel and Phebe. He was a successful farmer and lived in the 'old Ninth School District' near Pool Pond. B. May 28, 1766, Md. Rebecca Buswell (see Buswell Family). They had eight children. D. March 18, 1848 at Rindge. Two days before his wife's death. 7.

HOSEA. Third child of Asa and Rebecca. He was a farmer in Fitzwilliam, NH. B. February 17, 1804 Md. Nancy Smith on April 14, 1831. (see Smith Family). b.?, d. November 20, 1897 in Jaffrey, NH D. January 23, 1875 in Fitzwilliam, NH. 8.

CHARLES FREDERICK. Son of Hosea and Nancy, and their ninth child. He clerked as a young man in George W. Stearns store at Rindge Center. He and Julia lived in the house which is now part of Franklin Pierce College and when Julia's parents died, they moved to the former Stearns home at the foot of the hill. He,by someone who knew him, is described as being 'amiable'. B. April 22, 1847 Md. Julia Maria Stearns (see Stearns Family). The boss's daughter on November 27, 1867. They had three children: Julia Etta George W. S. Harry D. July 1923. 9.

Parker later became a Justice of the Peace and a Representative in the MA General Court from Dracutt. Parker is the source of many anecdotal and biographical history in the 1907 Varnum Genealogy.

!Ref: VOD p223 His brother Major General Joseph Bradley Varnum gave him the title of Major while serving on his staff after the Revolutionary War. In 1785, his father gave him 128 acres in Dracutt and "1/2 my dwelling house divided by the middle of the chimney, with land thereon the said house stands" - the other half having been conveyed to Joseph Bradley Varnum. The orignal house was destroyed by fire shortly afterwards and the new house was still standing in 1906 on the river raod to Lawrence - "one of the best specimens of country or farm mansions of that date in Dracutt". Joseph Bradley had previously a dwelling across the road. IN 1809-1811, he represented the town in the legislature of Massachusetts and held many Dracutt town offices.

State Senate of MA, 1818, National House of Representatives, 1826, two terms, defeating Caleb Cushing in 1828 (famous congressional contest of the time), popular in DC and in his district. Published newspaper in Haverhill with Isaac R Howe of Haverhill.married Mary Pease Varnum while he was a member of Congress from MA. Brother-in-law Caleb Butler of Groton's letter in 1826 discusses Calhoun, Clay and Jackson. John's letter of that time mentions the New Year's reception with the President and "twenty Indian chiefs in paint and feathers", noting that it was "ungenteel for any man to be seen with his wife". After his retirement from congress, he moved to Haverhill to take possession of his brother's farm and opened a law practice in Lowell, then moved to Niles, MI with his sons. He was " tall, fine-looking distinguished great conversational powers favorite with everyone who knew him."

Taught school in East Westford and Dracutt 1810-11. 8/6/1811, appointed Indian Factor at the Trading Post at Sandusky, Ohio until driven out by Indians during the War of 1812. Commissioned by President Madison 7/1813 as Major of the 40th US Infantry, and was ordered under Colonel Loring to Moose Island, near Eastport, ME, and there at Fort Sullivan, was forced to surrender to an English fleet headed by H. M Ship Ramalies and was imprisoned in Canada. Later during the was, he was on court Martial duty and President of a Court of Inquiry in Boston.After the war, in August 1815, he was appointed Governement Agent at the Trading factory at Fort Dearborn, now chicago, IL. On the way, he met and married Mary Ann in MI. Mary Ann died in childbirth soon after and he met Catherine while visiting Detroit. 1820-1828 he ran a mechantile business in Washington, DC. He then lived in Peterburg, VA and lost his wife during the Civil War siege. He passed away at the National Hotel in DC.

As of 1995, the manor is owned and lived in by Winthrop's grandson, Duncan Bartlett, wife Gail and family. Up until 1992, Czarina Wilcox also resided at the house in what was once the Parlor and Library, and has the bedroom and bathroom behind the parlor. (In that year, she was moved to a Nursing Home where she could better be cared for. As of 1996, she remains alive, though she cannot remember most of the family.)
