Received the following information while I was in Fairmont
This was taken from the work of a professional genealogist by the name of Clifford HOARD
As a young man, Jacob piloted the early settlers from Winchester VA to what is now WV. At that early date, around 1800 the pioneers were quite willing to pay an experienced guide to lead them over treacherous trails through a rough mountainous region.
There is no mystery as to how Jacob R SWISHER met Drusilla MORGAN. The old Monongahela River, a stream of traffic always, was the meeting place for scores of young folks and Jacob and Drusilla met somewhere along its shore.
In the census of 1850 Jacob R. is listed as a farmer. Farming in 1850 and for many years later was a subsistence occupation. Jacob was more than a struggling farmer. He initiated a town called Newport. His sale of lots for this business venture gave him an excellent monetary return.
During the formative period of New Port there existed a boat building dock. The boats constructed were small in size as the steam boat was not a factor this far south on the Monongahela River. Three coopers lived in New Port between 1840 & 1880. They were: Elisha SUMMERS, and the SWISHER brothers, Morgan M, and William D. The barrels, tubs and churns that they fashioned were in great demand...
As of 1983 all of the manufacturing industry is gone along with the store and Post Office. The Methodist Church is still there. Even though it is not the same building it stands as a monument to memory of Jacob R. and Drusilla MORGAN SWISHER, founders of the first Methodist Church in that section of Winfield District in Marion County, WV.

Exerpts from biography of M. W. SWISHER.His birth occurred in Hardy Co. WV, September 30. 1830, his parents being Henry and Sarah (HUFFMAN) SWISHER, who were also natives of that county, in which they spent their entire lives.
He followed his trade in his native county until 1856, when he went to Missouri in company with his wife, having been married in October of that year to Miss Melinda V. MILLER.
After a period of 3 years spent in Missouri, during which time he followed both farming and carpentering, he made his way to Muskingum county, Ohio, arriving there in the year 1860, with his wife and baby and five dollars in money. At the end of 18 months he came to Licking County, in 1862, settling on a farm two miles from Newark....His first purchase of land comprised 35 acres on Lover's Lane, Newark township. The place lies just outside the city limits of Newark and for 18 years he there made his home, after which he bought 25 acres adjoining. He also bought 96 acres in Licking tnshp and in 1880 he removed to Franklin township where he had purchased 112 acres. In 1895, however, he took up his abode in Licking township, on a place of 100 acres, which he had purchased there and it remained his home for 7 years. He next bought 92 1/2 acres in Mary Ann township and removed to his present location.
Unto Mr & Mrs SWISHER were born 2 children:
Joseph M., deceased; Sarah Elizabeth, the wife of J C ANDERSON, of Newark.
His first wife died in 1875 and he married his present wife in 1876.
Her name was Susan WILKIN, and this union was blessed with 2 children:
John W., a resident of Mary Ann township; and Ida M., the wife of F.H. WILKIN, a resident of Franklin township.
