[under Leigh] JOHANNA DEAN, WID.. holds 4 closes called Caprone Downe in the parish of Winsham and Croukett of 30 acres of arable, furze and moor, for term of her life and ROBERT HER SON by copy dated 28 Apr. 1509. Reversion granted to WALTER DEAN JOHANE JUNIOR and ALIANORE, SISTERS OF THE SAID WALTER, for their lives, dated Vigil of the Holy Cross 1528.

WALTER DEANE claimed of the lord 4 closes called Caprons Downe, now in the tenure of Johane Deane, to hold to himself and his assigns for the term of 21 years next after the decease of JOHANE HIS MOTHER for a fine of 10 pounds of which 5 pounds was to be paid at the feast of St. Michael the Archange next and 5 pounds at Easter [whole entry was crossed out and a note added that THE SISTER WHO WAS IN THE COPY WAS TOHAVE THE SAME AFTER THE DEATH OF THE MOTHER. At the court held 17 Oct. 1561 Walter Deane surrendered the above estate in the premises into the hands of the lord.]

Note at the head of the next page noted the receipt on 27 Oct. 1563 of 5 pounds from Walter Deane, at the hands of John Phelipps, as part payment of an entry fine of 20 pounds.

Walter Deane holds by copy dated 16 Apr. 1565 one heriotable tenement and one cottage to which pertains 17 acres of land viz. a curtilage, garden and orchard [listed lands in commn field] to hold to him and LETTICE HILL, DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM HILL, for their lives by grant of William Petre, kt., rent 14s. [added later] Reversion granted to Elenor Balston and Johane Deane, daughters of the said Johane [sic] for their lives by copy dated 10 Oct. 1593, fine 30 pounds.

Walter Deane holds by copy dated 3 Apr. 1527 one heriotable tenement and one cottage, to which pertains 17 acres of land lying in divers closes or parcels, viz. a curtilage, garden and orchard, 4 acres in South Field, 7 acres in Myddlellfelde, 5 acres in North Field 2 1/2 acres in Holwaie, 3 rods in Gulwill Meade, 1/2 acre in Gore Meade. To hold to him for term of his life by grant of Thomas la Ware and Lady Elizabeth his wife under fine 33s4d, rent 13s.

WALTER DEANE holds by copy dated 16 April 7 Elizabeth (1565) a tenement and cottage for his life and the life of LETICIE, DAU. OF WILLIAM HILL. Undated later note of reversion of property to Eleanor Balstone and Joan Deane, dau. of the said Joan on 10 Oct. 30 Elizabeth (1588).

Johanna Deane widow holds one tenement and one cottage with appurtenances of 17 acres [etc. as listed above] to hold for her widowhood and after the premises to be granted to Elenor Balston and Johanna Deane, daughters of the said Johanna, for term of their lives by grant of John Petre kt. for fine of 30 pounds as appears by copy dated 10 Oct. 1593, by rent 14s.

...present that Walter Deane, who of the Lord held by indenture certain closes called Capon [sic] Downe, containing by estimation 30 acres, died since the last court [previous court was held 9 Apr. 1591], whereupon there fell due to the lord for reliec 6s8d. And it is presented that the bailiff should admonish the wife of the said Walter that she produce the writing by which she claims to hold the said premises and show the same to the steward at the next court [ the next court was held on 7 Sept. 1591, but included no relevant entry]

Survey acreage and a tenement held by Walter Deane, of South Chard in the Survey of 1580 is held by Johana Deane, wid. for her life, after which the property is to go to Eleanor Balstone and Johanna Deane for their lives
Will of Walter Deane is dated July 7, 1585, proved Jul 10, 1591, by Geoffrey Clarke Notary Public, Proctor for William Deane the son and executor. . (PCC Sainberbe 56, Wills vol 62 Somerset Record Office).
To be bur. in churchyard in Chard. To poor folks 20 groates. To Eleanor Deane my daughter 30 pounds...to Joan Deane my daughter 30 pounds. Residue of my goods; to Joane my wife one moiety thereof, for her life, and aftr her death to remain to William my son to whom I give all the rest of my goods, and I make him sole executor...THOMAS BONDAGE, THOMAS SMITHE and JOHN LEGG of Southcharde to be overseers, to whom I give 2s apiece. Will of Joane Deane, widow of Chard is dated March 29, 1597, proved May 10, 1597.(Wills, Vol. 62, Somerset Record Office.
" ........To 20 poor folk of Chard 4d each... To Joane, daughter of my son, William. To Son William,. To daughter, Elianor, HUMFRIE BALSTON, daughter Joan Deane to be executrix. I William Dean of Southchard within parish of Chard in the county of Somersett sicke of bodie but of sound and perfect memorie thanks bee given to God doe make and decalare this my last wWill and Testament.......I give to the poore of Chardland twenty shillings to bee distributed by the discrecon of my Executor and of MY SONNE THOMAS DEANE ONE OF MY OVERSEERS... Item to JOHN DEANE MY SONNE I give and bequeath a chest standing in the hall, a truckle bedsted and bed furnished, wheat the halfendeale of the hay wich is in COLFIELD the remynder of the terme yet to come in BROADFIELD together with the lease thereof. The residue of the terme yet to come in HAM MEADE and the Lease thereof, yeelding and paying therefore from the Feast date of St. Michaell next after my decease to SUSAN, ELLIANOR, MARGERIE AND ELIZABETH MY DAUGHTERS foure pounds apeece yearelie during the contynuance of his now estate therein and soe rateably for any lesser terme of his estate therein at any other tyme then at the end of a full yeare happen to take end and determyne, Also I give and bequeath to him in money fortie shillings to bee paid him within three moneths after my decease. Item to MY DAUGHTER SUSAN DEANE I give that bedstead which is in the inner chamber with its appurtennces, one skellet, a posnett, a great barrell, a side saddle, a coffer in the inner chamber, a third part of all my wooll, the CHAPPELL and YE WRITEINGS for holding thereof and in money seaventy three pounds six shillings an eight pence to bee paid at the endo f six months. Item to MY DAUGHTER ELEANOR DEANE I give and bequeath that Cofer which is in the chamber of the kitching, a bed stead also standing there and my best feathered furnished, a little brasse pott, one of my greater barrells, a piltion and a third part of all my wooll, and seaventie three pounds six shillings and eight pence in money to bee paid at the end of six moneths after my decease. Item to MARGERIE STRONG MY DAUGHTER I give the least brasse pott of the three, my best cauldron and tenne pounds in money to bee paid within one yeare after my decease, and to HER SONNE and MY GRAND CHILD JOHN STRONG. I give five pounds to be paid att the end of two yeares after my decease upon sufficient discharge given to acquite my my executor thereof. Item To MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER ELIZABETH I give and bequeath a bedstead in the Low chamber, a featherbed furnished, a little table boord over the entire, a coffer in the inner chamber, one of the great barrells, the third part of my wooll and seaventie three pounds six shillings and eight pence in money to bee paid at the end of six moneths after my decease. And if any to whom an procon is hereby given chance to dye before his her or their porcon or pocons bee due to bee paid my will therein is that such their porcon or porcons be devyded equallie betweene MY THREE YOUNGER SONNES JOHN, WALTER AND ISAAKE and my FOWER DAUGHTERS, or betweene such of them as then bee livieing. Lastly I hereby ordeine and appoynt WILLIAM DEANE MY ELDEST SONNE to bee Executor of this my las will and testament, and THOMAS LEGG SONNE OF THOMAS LEGG THE ELDER and MY SONNE THOMAS DEANE Overseers hereof, and in consideracon thereof doe give to each of them two shillings. By mee William Deane. And as touching the clause in the latter end of the will that if any Legatee dye before his or her porcon become due, the testator shewed that his meaneing therein is that if any of his daughters chaunce to marry and doe happen being married to dye that such her porcon shall then bee paid to the husband of such daughter.
