Children's Stories

[Birds Fly. Fish Swim.]  [Coming Soon]

Birds Fly. Fish Swim.

A story about a penguin who wants to swim with his friends,
but doesn't know how to swim. He must learn that trying is necessary if he
wants to swim. Come meet Peter and his supportive friends while he learns
how fun trying is!

Peter Penguin watched Fred Fish swim towards him.
Swimming looked like such fun!

"Hi!  Peter!", said Fred Fish.
Peter wanted to swim with Fred, but Peter couldn't swim.
"Hi! Fred." said Peter sadly.

"Come splash with me and play tag." said Fred as he leaped into the air.
SPLASH! Peter wanted to, but he couldn't swim.
"Birds fly. Fish swim. I'm a bird and I can't swim." said Peter.

Fred thought a moment.  "Have you ever tried to swim?" asked Fred.
"No, I'm afraid." sighed Peter.
Fred waved goodbye with his tail and said,
"If you ever learn to swim, I'll play tag with you!"

"Hi! Peter." smiled Sammy Sea Lion.
Peter waved hello. "Come play!" said Sammy.
Peter didn't know how to swim. He was afraid to try.
Peter just shook his head no.

"Why don't you try to swim, Peter?" asked Sammy.
Peter cried, "I'm afraid I won't swim as good as everyone else.
Everyone might laugh."
"Peter, we all had to learn before we could swim this good.
If we didn't try to swim, we wouldn't be able to."
Sammy floated on his back. "I've got to go.
If you learn to swim, we can play together. " Peter wanted to try.
Something inside him was afraid.

Just then, Pam the Polar Bear popped her head out of the water.
"Hey, Peter! Come play."
"I can't swim." said Peter.
"I'm a bird. Birds fly. Birds don't swim. Fish swim."
"I'm not a fish. I swim." said Pam. "That's different." said Peter.

"Look! There goes Gus the Goose! See how he flies."
Peter watched as Gus soared overhead.

Pam thought a moment and then smiled, "I know birds that swim."
Peter looked surprised. "You do?" Peter asked.

"I've never seen a bird swim.
Birds just float on top of the water." said Peter a bit confused.
"Carrie Cormorant is a bird and she swims." said Pam Polar Bear.

"Could she show me?" asked Peter excitedly.
"I'm sure she could. I'll get her." said Pam.
Pam dove under the water and went to get Carrie.

"Hello, Peter!" Carrie said as she floated right up to him.
Peter had seen birds float on the water before.
He didn't think much of her swimming ability. "Hi Carrie.
Pam said you could swim." Peter waited for a response.
"Yep, I sure can." said Carrie.

With that, Carrie dove under the water!
Peter couldn't believe it! She could swim.
He thought if Carrie could do it, he could too!
He dipped his toes into the water.

If he could swim, he could play tag with all his friends.
Peter really wanted to play tag.

Peter gathered all his courage.
He took a deep breath and JUMPED right into the water.
Carrie shouted, "Hooray!"

Peter felt proud. Peter couldn't swim as well as the others yet.
With practice, he will be as good.
"Peter," said Sammy, "You did great!
Just think, if you never tried, you might have never learned to swim!"
"Yes, Peter. Trying is important." Fred said.
Peter swam off with his friends.
Soon he learned to swim, splash and dive just like his friends...
maybe even better!
