Ethelred Fountain was born in NC in 1785, a son of John Fountain,RS . After the Revolutionary War and soon after Ethelred's birth the fam ily moved to SC and from there to Jefferson Co,Ga abt 1800. On Feb 1 1 1813, in Jefferson Co

Ethelred Fountain married Elenor Ingram, born 1786 in Burke (now Jeff erson) Co, dau of David Ingram of that county. They had the followin g children:

Israel Fountain born 1775 NC, an older brother of Ethelred married De lphia

Watkins and he and Ethelred and their families moved to Wilkinson Co . Israel

moved there first, about 1815, and settled abt two miles from the pre sent town of Gordon in that county. Ethelred moved to Wilkinson abou t 1835 and settled near his brother and lived there the remainder o f his life. He died there about 1860. About 1845 Wm. E. Fountain an d James I. Fountain the two sons of Ethelred moved to Lowndes Co, an d in 1856 were cut into the new county of Berrien.

Mr Fountain and his wife were buried in the Fountain Family Cem in Wi lkinson

Co, located about 2 miles out from Gordon, Ga.

as such until recently, she was Sarah A. born Apr 4 1824 in Wilkinso n Co, wife of Merritt A. Sanders and second wife of Aaron Knight(Vo l 2). Merritt A.

Sanders died in Berrien Co in 1856. It was their son, Samuel G. Sande rs who

married Nancy Smith in Berrien Co Dec 9 1869, as shown in sketch of h er father John Smith in Vol 2.

Wm. E. Fountain was born in Wilkinson Co, Jul 26 1816 a son of Ethelr ed

Fountain and his wife Elender Ingram Fountain. The latter were marrie d in

Jefferson Co, Feb 11 1813, Mrs Elender Fountain being a daughter of D avid

Ingram of Jefferson Co. Ethelred and wife soon after marriage moved to

Wilkinson Co where their children were born.

Wm. E. Fountain was married in Wilkinson Mar 31 1844 to Frances a da u of Dawson and Frances Webb. She was born in 1822. To Mr and Mrs Fou ntain were born seven children:

Mr Fountain moved to Lowndes Co abt 1845, and at the same time move d his wife's parents, his brothers, James J. and his family and other s of the family connection, all settleing in that portion of Lownde s that was cut into Berrien Co in 1856. His brother-in-law David S. R obinson and family moved there later 1860. The Fountain home and far m was in the present Ray City section of Berrien Co. He died there Au g 28 1896, and his wife died two years later Jul 6 1898.

They were buried at Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church.

He was baptized into Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church, May 19 1888 a nd was

excluded Feb 16 1889. Mrs Frances Fountain, his wife, was received in to same

church Aug 18 1866 and baptized, she died a member.

The Fountain family of Berrien Co are descended from John Fountain(Fo untaine)

who served in the Revolutionary War in a company of NC militia from H yde Co.

During the war, or soon after, John Fountain moved to SC and thence a bt 1800 to Jefferson Co Ga. Two of the sons of John,viz., Israel an d Ethelred, settled in Wilkinson Co and another son, Henry settled i n Irwin Co after a bried sojourn in Florida.

seventh was John D. Fountain, born c1864, never married.(2) It was st ated in

the first line of the third paragraph that he moved to Lowndes Co "ab out 1865", which was a tyographical error, undetected; it was about 1 845 that the family moved to Lowndes (now Berrien) Co. David S. Robin son did not move there at the time as was stated, and did not move th ere until after 1860. James J. Fountain referred to as a brother, wa s James I. Fountain.

DEATH OF MRS CATO

On friday last all that was mortal of Mrs Nancy Cato was interred a t the family burying ground near Helena, Ga. Mrs Cato was blessed wit h a longevity rarely attained by mankind. She was nearly congential w ith the present century, having attained the advanced age of ninety-t hree years. She leaves quite a number of children and granchildren t o mourn her loss. Until the recent past she enjoyed remarkable healt h for a person of her age. Indeed, the prime cause of her death was d ue to old age more than to anything else.

Mrs Cato was the grandaughter of Mrs William E. Fountain, Mrs Jesse I . Fountain, and Mrs Luni Brantley all of our town; she has also a num ber of great grandchidlren here. her death comes to them as a shock a s they had not been appraised of her illness. Her relatives here tend erly loved her.

He was a witness to William Chambers' Confederate Penison Claim tha t was filed in Montgomery county. He stated he was a brother-in-law t o William Chambers.

He is listed in Census Montgomery Co of 1880 and 1900 and had about 12

children. Information not obtained yet!

CELEBRATED 85TH BIRTHDAY

Mr James I. Fountain celebrated his 85th birthday Jan 6th. All of hi s 12

children were present and a large number of grand and great-grand chi ldren.

A sumptuous dinner was spread, after which prayer was offered by th e pastor,

Rev J.W. Simmons. His reading was from a testament printed nearly 10 0 years

ago.

Father Fountain has had of immediate descendants, born 81, now livin g 67. The

old gentleman is yet very active and makes himself useful about home.

AN AGED CITIZEN PASSED AWAY

On Friday afternoon last Mr James I. Fountain one of Montgomery Co ol dest

citizens died at his residence of his eldest daughter, Mrs M.J. Thomp son with, whom he made his home. The remains were laid to rest in th e McKregor Cemetery in Mt Vernon beside those of his wife, who preced ed him to the grave by a few years, Rev J.B. Griner of the Methodis t church conducted the funeral service.

Mr Fountain came to Montgomery Co about 30 years ago from Lowndes Cou nty . He

reached the advanced age of 87 years in Jan last and was well known t o all our older citizens. Of his children living, there remains fou r daughter's Mrs M.J. Thompson, Mrs Joe Palmer, Mrs George Jenkins, a nd Mrs John Hughs; and six sons William E., J.J., Jessie L., Mitchel l N., Milton and David A. Fountain.

MARRIED HIMSELF

Mr James I. Fountain, the 80 odd year old gentleman who attempted t o marry Mrs Mary F. Brown a couple of weeks or so ago, has again dist inguished himself in a very unique fashion.

After his children succeeded in getting his license away from him, h e seemed

for a while to be at the end of his line. Bur "where there is a wil l there is a way", and "necessity is the mother of invention", and af ter reflecting upon the matter and taking advice of counsel, he too k the candidate for his brideship and left town, after having unsucce ssfully tried every one in the place who was authorized to perform th e marriage service. Crossing the river in the direction of Glenwood , they called at the house of a Mr Couie, and took dinner. After dinn er, there being a number of witnesses present, the old gentleman proc eeded very formally to perform the marriage ceremony for himself, aft er which the happy couple returned to town and announced to their ast onished children and friends that they were man and wife.

The Sabrina who married Mr Fountain was born 1832, making it impossib le to have birth at age of abt 5 years.

This Sabrina Chambers could be the daughter of Henry Chambers not Wil liam

Chambers! She is the sister to William Chambers, Confederate War Vete ran.

Her headstone reads, " In Memory of Sabrina Fountain Born Feb 22, 183 2 died Apr 15, 1895 Not lost to love not lost to memory, But gone t o our heavenly home above."

DIED On last Tuesday afternoon a large concourse of relatives and fri ends met at the Methodist Church to pay the last tribute to the morta l remains of Mrs James I.Fountain, who died on the morning of the 15t h, after many months of intense suffering. As a wife and mother she w as faithful and being tried in the furnace of affliction like pure go ld she stood the test, and expressed herself a few days before she di ed as one who had been with Jesus.

The beautiful and impressive funeral service of the Methodist churc h was

conducted by Rev J.D. Anthony, the music from the organ by Mrs Jone s was

touchingly sweet.
