A wide shot of the sign announcing exit 100 to Abernant and Bucksville. This is also the exit to Tannehill State Park, although for a more scenic and relaxing route I suggest the Eastern Valley Road and not I-20/59. The turn into the park is clearly marked so you won't miss it once you're on Eastern Valley. If you are traveling to the Magic City from points west, or just need to connect with I-459, you can take this exit and hang then a right. The eastern terminus of AL 216 in Bucksville is followed by a sharp turn off to the east over the Jefferson County line and then a fairly straight shot off to 459. The old houses with large shaded yards and farms along this route strike quite a contrast with the areas north of the interstate through Tuscaloosa and Jefferson Counties (along AL 216 and the Johns Road). This picture is from the northeast-bound side of the highway, early on in the widening phase of construction. Headed southwest out of the Bessemer/Birmingham area and towards Tuscaloosa, exit 100 connects you with AL 216, or the Old Birmingham Highway, a somewhat rough look at the coal country of central Alabama. Highlights include missing the tussle of I-20/59 as well as the strip pits near Brookwood. |
