If you want to roadgeek and get immediate results -- say, take a few photos of how-things-used-to-be -- this is the area. US 78 is in the process of being widened through northwest Alabama, such that Birmingham and Memphis, Tennessee will be connected most efficiently. The project was labeled Corridor X and is one of Sen. Richard Shelby's many pets. A long stretch of what was US 78 is being resigned as Alabama 118. Corridor X is now scheduled to become I-22, which may displace US 78 from its four-laned home. So the signs are changing and will continue to in this area.
In this photo, facing south basically, a temporary north/south leg of US 78 connects the opened section of Corridor X with the existing two-lane near Winfield. The "business" rectangle at the lower right seems somewhat out of place, but I suppose is designed to keep travelers from missing downtown Winfield and all it has to offer. |
