The shield for US 78 has been removed from this sign along the first four-laned section of the highway in northwest Alabama. For many years this was the end of the interstate-style four-laning of 78; the rest of the route to Birmingham was a slow go of two-lane rural highway and urbanized main-drags. Now the four-lane, which stretches all the way into Tennessee heading west, continues a few more miles into Alabama, to just north of Winfield. It won't be long before US 78 becomes old US 78, signed primarily as AL 118 through the western part of the state. |
