Two looks at a rather unique set of highway directional markers on Birmingham's Southside. This intersection at 5th Ave So. is notable as the confluence of four major routes through the city and the state: US 11 parallels I-59 through Mississippi and Alabama; US 280 connects B'ham with Columbus, GA and is known as the "Florida Short Route" as it continues on to Gainesville; US 31 parallels the major north-south artery connecting Huntsville with the capital, Montgomery, I-65; and US 78 becomes "Corridor X" northwest of the Magic City, linking Tupelo and Memphis with northwest and central Alabama and then parallelling I-20 into Atlanta, Georgia. |
