"ten reasons"
Ear cropping is performed for cosmetic purposes to acheive a desired look, and in dog fighting to prevent the ears form being ripped or torn. The most common breeds to have this procedure are Boxers, Great Danes, Dobermans, Minpins, Schnauzers, and American Pit Bull Terriers. The surgery first requires the dog to go under full anesthesia, then the ears are cut to a point so they will stand erect. Most people think that's it, well they're wrong! Then you have tape and splint the dog's ears  to get them to stand up straight, and the puppy's ears will be sore and sensitive to any touching for several weeks.I personally do not approve of the surgery as it is only for looks, but that is just my opinion. I would not put my dogs through the pain, I think they are beautiful how they are, but it is your personal choice to have this surgery performed. If you
choose to have the procedure done it should ONLY be performed by a licensed veterinarian to ensure that is done properly, and it should be done before the puppy is four months old. Do not risk cropping your dog's ears your self, there are to many risks! The ears may become seriously infested and cause the dog extra pain, along with the fact that you probably won't do a very good job, and it will come out looking horrible. Cropping your dog's ears yourself will only cause you to have to take them to the vet to treat the infections, and will leave your dog with ugly scars! The only
reason you should really get your dog's ears cropped in the first place is if you are going to place it in the show ring and even then it should not be necessary. Ear cropping does not improve the quality of your dog, It does not increase his chances of winning. Dogs with natural ears can and do win championships. Ear cropping will however inhibit the way your dog interacts with other dogs. Dogs use their ears as a way of comminucating with others. When a dog does not have ears it affects the way he communicates with other animals.
Tail Docking is usually performed when the puppies are from three to five days old, and no anisthetic is used. Some of the most common breeds with docked tails are the Rottweiler, Doberman, Poodle, Schipperke, and most Terriers. When done after a week of age the puppy must wait until it is old enough for anisthetic to be used. The healing process is more complicated as well, as are the risks. There is a chance of premature stich removal by the dog, poor healing, and more scarring.
The American Pit Bull Terrier while accepted with both natural, and cropped ears, was never meant to have a docked tail. In my opinion they do not look good with docked tails. I love them woth their natual ears and long tails! Any dog unless being used in the show ring should not have their tail docked unless you just cannot live with a natural tail. In fact most veterinary colleges do not even teach these practices anymore, so you're better off not having it done or they just might do a bad job! A dog needs their tail because they use it to communicate with us and other animals! They is it to tell us when they are happy, by wagging it, and angry or frightened, by tucking it between their legs.

Please just remember if you absolutely cannot live with natural ears or long tails, have the surgery performed by a licensed veterinarian, to prevent serious infections!
Below are the consequences of some ignorant people who cropped the ears with various tools including office scissors and kitchen knives. Their lack of education and knowledge to properly crop the ears resulted in these dogs suffering.
