The American Pit Bull Terrier is generally a very friendly and intelligent breed. They love their family, friends, and even strangers, but they will protect their loved ones if necessary. Normally they are not human aggressive, but are dog aggressive. This depends on the individual. When properly socialized this shouldn't be a big problem, but doesn't mean they will turn turn down a challenge from another dog. They have a very high prey drive and should be watched carefully around small animals. APBT's are often dog aggressive but not always, it varies from dog to dog. Early socialization and obedience training will help you to control this. A dog who has been taught how to behave around other animals will be much easier to control. Puppies won't usually show the trait until they mature, so don't think that your dog won't develop the trait later in life. These dogs are often so friendly that they will allow strangers to walk right into their yards,a nd even their house! They make poor watch dogs, and should not be used for guarding purposes. If you are looking for a good watch dog find a breed that is bred for that purpose, such as one in the working group. These dogs are very silly and will keep you laughing for hours! They are extremely energetic and rambunctious, you MUST have lots of time to spend with them. They need hours of playtime and exercise or they can become bored and destructive. Pit Bulls are very creative and intelligent, when you leave them alone they will sometimes invent their own games to keep themselves entertained. Pit Bulls aren't considered mature until the age of two or three. They can and do interact peacefully with other animals. Thousands of people keep them successfully in multi-animal households, but careful supervision is always a necessary precaution!
