As a way to help others I searched for a charitable organization that I would feel comfortable working within. I knew I wanted to create something with my hands, such as Afghans or quilts, that would then be passed on to those in need. All the organizations I checked into were very Christian oriented. I don't have a problem with Christianity per SE, but I didn't feel comfortable working within that framework. One organization, Newborns in Need, crochets and knits hats for preemie babies. They also make Afghans and quilts. I loved this idea, but wanted something more. That's when the idea for a pagan organization, Pagans For Preemies, came to me. I love the idea of helping babies in need and thought other pagans might as well. Plus, as pagans, we have something to offer that those other organizations don't: We know how to empower the items we create with healing energy! I chose a local hospital, the one I birthed in actually, to donate the items I create to. If you wish to help, you can either send your handmade items to me, or to a place of your choice. I suggest you contact your local hospital's NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) about donating to them directly. This way your are helping within the community in which you live. To date I have crocheted 443 preemie hats and Afghans. All are being empowered with healing energy so those dear, little babes with have an extra boost of energy to help them along their way. When I go purchase yarn people always ask what I'm doing with all of it. When I tell them they always say "God will surely bless you for that" I always reply that, although that may be true, it isn't why I do it. I do it because I have a genuine desire to help and I feel that if each one of us were to give of ourselves, even the tiniest bit, then we would surely change the world. I really believe that too. If everyone were to give freely and lovingly of themselves, without any thoughts of tax deductions, personal image (this will make me look so humble....) Or ulterior motives, then things would have to change. The loving, healing energy we send out would continue to grow, reaching every one on the planet eventually. What a world it would be then! Even if you don't know how to knit or crochet, you can easily learn. I hadn't crocheted in years, but the preemie hats are so easy to make a child could do it. When choosing yarn, buy the softest you can for their tiny heads are very sensitive. Lion Brand makes some great baby yarns as does Red Heart. A baby hat takes less than an hour to make, an Afghan a couple of hours and a small quilt less than a day. When making hats, a good rule of thumb as far as size is concerned is that a preemie hat should fit over an orange. A full term baby hat should fit over a grapefruit. Below are a few patterns and links to sites which offer free patterns. I've created my own pattern and if I can ever manage to write it down will post it here for all to use. Please get involved and offer your healing energy and time to those wonderful, sweet babies. They are our future.......
