Why I Love Sam |
Being as my original article has been lost forever due to technical difficulties, this is the new (dare I say improved?) version of that article… Samwise Gamgee is my very favourite of all the Hobbits. Why, you might ask? Well, we can start with the fact that Sam is the closest “hobbification” (I could say manifestaion, but Sam’s not a man, is he now?) to true love and devotion that I have ever come across. My love for Sam never ever came from the movie (well….maybe a little…Sean Astin did an exceptional job), but instead came from the original novel by Tolkien. Sam is willing to do anything for his Master Frodo, and is willing to go all the way into the dark land of Mordor for him. His love for his friend outweighs his fears in every case. Most of you have probably seen the movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, and saw Sam nearly drown himself just so that he could follow Frodo. Any of you who have not read the book, you’re slackers! ; ) But I don’t want to ruin what’s to come so I will only say this: Giant Spiders are no match for the likes of one Samwise Gamgee!! Anyway, there has been some speculation on the character of Sam being a kind of Jesus figure in the book, as he constantly sacrifices himself and everything else he has for Frodo. However, I don’t agree with this theory. For one thing, I know that Tolkien HATED allegories, so for him to turn around and start linking characters from his book to religious figures seems a bit absurd. There are also those who have chosen not to see the movie or read the book because of the use of magic and such….this also makes no sense to me as Tolkien was very, very Christian. If he was as nearly as Christian as I have read he is, why would he write a “satanic” novel? The book was only meant to be an adventure story (well, that’s how I see it anyway…based on my knowledge of the subject…though I’m by no means an expert…this is simply my opinion). Anyway, I’ve become side-tracked…My point is that Sam is the best! I love everything about him and I think some of the points I’ve made in this article are some of the reasons many of you love him as well… |
Isn't this an amazing image?!?! I love it!! This is almost exactly what I think of when I think of Sam and his devotion. |
