"Kerbschnitzen" or "engraving carving", which originated in Europe, is the art of incising a pattern or design directly into wood. The technique employed by chip carving is specifically, removing a series of precise chips of wood to form an engraved design lower than the surface of the wood. The wood that is removed leaves exactly the design desired. Chip carving is an art in a class of its own. It is currently enjoying a renaissance and is being recognized for the true art form that it is.
