First of all if you have not already purchased a Saint Bernard,do some research first,The Saint bernard is a giant breed and does need some special consideration,Because of it's nature it will try to fit into any home situation,But some are not recommended For a Saint Bernard(in my opinion)
For example,a small unit with very little room for the dog to excercise, where the dog is not going to be excercised by it's new owner outside the family home.
THESE NEXT FEW ITEMS I THINK ARE A MUST:Regular vacinations, plenty of shade, shelter and water.
A comfortable, suitiable bed for your dog
A Reccomended complete and balanced diet
(for the health and well being of your dog)
When you go to purchase a Saint some of the important questions,I think that should be asked of the breeder are do you guarantee your stock, what diet have you got the puppy on at the moment,do you offer a help line. All responsible breeders will bend over backwards to help, for the health and welfare of the dog is the most important thing to a responsible breeder.
IT IS MY EXPERIENCE:That under no circumstances should a dog be brought from a backyard breeder or from a pet shop(For we have done this, many years ago and it led to nothing but heartache)
WE HIGHLY RECCOMMENT YOU DEAL WITH A REPUTABLE,WELL ESTABLISHED BREEDER,GO THROUGH YOUR LOCAL SAINT BERNARD BREED CLUB OR RESCUE SERVICE  WHICH WILL BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU A LIST OF BREEDERS TO DEAL WITH.

Caring for your Saint

Your Saint needs a complete and balanced diet(there are many good products on the market,I suggest you ask the breeder what they think is the best, this will vary from breeder to breeder)
Your Saint will need a comfortable bed in which to sleep(not yours)always go for the biggest size as your Saint will not stay small for very long(or you may aquire an adult)a good bed will stop your Saint from getting Pressure soars and callous's
If you have a Rough coat it will need regular brushing(We generally find a good bush once a weak)Pionts to check throughly are behind the ears, britches, tail, feathers on the feet and under the neck(We have found on the roughs these could be the problem areas)
If you have a smooth coat, you can get away with only brushing once a fortnight, this will change when your dog is molting,if your dog is molting whether it be rough or smooth we find that you have to brush him/her daily(they tend to loose a great deal of hair for up to a fortnight, depends on how dilligent you are with your brushing regeim)
Your Saint must always have access to a plentiful, clean water supply.
You must check your Saints ears on a regular basis, keep them clean and dry
When you are brushing your saint always check well between the toes on the top and underneath for grass seeds or burrs.
Because of the amount that a saint eats we split our dogs meals, into two meals and feed one in the morning and one at night(consult your breeder on this matter)don't let him/her do hard exercise or dink a lot of water straight after feeding (this will reduce the change of your dog getting bloat or so I have been told by my vet)
