Yes,I am a real-life hermit,a retired Orthodox Arcbishop who after 30 years of active service, became fedup with the entire organized religion community and headed for the rainforest of Hawaii.I have three(mortgaged) acres here surrounded by nothing but more rainforest.Three miles of bumpy dirt road separates me from blacktop and concrete. At first I thought I should found a little community of hermits of both sexes with whom to share my life.A string of unsuitable psychos changed that. I am still open to that idea, but I would screen very tightly any new candidates.I like it just fine here with my many cats and a jungle full of myna birds.I live a fairly traditional "desert father" lifestyle with the Rule of St.Benedict as my baseline modified by insights from other monastic traditions. However I am a postmodern man so I find it neccessary to filter out the silly ideas about diet of the Fathers and their strange notions about associations with women, demons and other bizarre monkthink.Silence and solitude are all important, the better to hear the voice of the God within, whom I have discovered is quite different from the "God" of most theologians.I started my religious life as a monk and tho I then became involved in active ministry for 30 years,I always had this desire to spend my last years on earth as a hermit. Finally in 1993,I had the opportunity to activate this desire.Even my active years were semi-monastic. I avoided parish work in preference to teaching in seminary. This gave me full range for theological studies of my own and for passing these on to several generations of priests-in-training.Let me warn you traditionalist-types that my pages are not for you nor will I argue my positions with you. You do not know enough to argue with my theses intelligently.Blind Guides,Shepherds allowing your flocks to perish for lack of knowledge! I have nothing to do with you!A plague on all of you!For others-keep with me.You will never find me boring.Actually I despise debate in general. I will put my ideas out there, take them or leave them. That is it. Eventually I will put up a page about my guest hermitage. For now, know that I have one and that you are welcome for a price-cheapest place in Hawaii. If you dare apply to join me for a longer period,go for it.You will be much on your own and will have to support yourself. I have no interest in a traditional community or Order. If that happens, well,it happens, but no such plan. For now, address is Hermitage,POB731,Mt.View,Hi.96771,no phone calls.email me here;hermit3712@yahoo.com |
