During the war years of 1941-45, in south central Pennsylvania, Mechanicsburg High School was located in the town on west Simpson Street between Frederick and High Streets. The student body consisted of pupils from the borough and the rural Cumberland Valley area surrounding the town including the smaller towns of Shiremanstown, Lisburn, Bowmansdale, Grantham, New Kingstown, Hogestown and the greater Silver Springs area. The enrollment averaged about 450 students with the graduating classes numbering from 40 students prior to 1930 up to 160 during the peak years of World War II. From 1925 through 1945 this small school produced over 900 men eligible to be called into the military to serve their country during that war. Today almost two thirds of them have gone to their final reward. The record of their service, self sacrifice, and heroics during that “great crusade” is lost forever. However, most of those who are still with us are, for the most part, willing and sometimes eager to relate their experiences. This book chronicles for the first time the stories of some of those students who served. There are over 30 interview excerpts, more than 150 personal stories in the veterans’ own handwriting, and scores of pictures never made available for public viewing before. We owe these veterans so very much, the least we can do is listen, learn and be grateful.
