Jacob Kenner Wilhelm was born 1845 in Indiana Co, Pa. He had black hair, dark complexion, brown or gray eyes, and was 5 ft. 7.5" tall. (from pension records)
When General Robert E. Lee invaded Pa in the spring of 1863 (prior to the battle of Gettysburg), Governor Curtin of Pennsylvania called for volunteers for military duty. Most of the units organized as a result of this call were formed after the Battle of Gettysburg. Since most of these volunteers were concerned with protecting their state, rather than fighting on other fronts, they were recruited for six months, or during the emergency caused by the invasion (Caldwell, 1880) Several independent battalions were formed. One of these was made up primarily of Indiana County men. Jacob K. Wilhelm enlisted in Company D of this battalion. He was enrolled 19 June 1863 at West Lebanon, Pa. and mustered in on 8 July 1863 in Pittsburgh, Pa. His company commander was Captain John W. Coleman. The battalion commander was Lt. Col. John C. Lininger This battalion served seven months with the duty of guarding railroad crossings on the upper Potomic. Headquarters for the unit was located at Green Spring Run, WV. The unit was disbanded on 21 January 1864. During January and February 1864, recruitment for the U.S. Signal Corps was conducted in Indiana County. About 50 Men were enlisted to serve for three years under Order No. 410 of the War Department. The men served in every department of the army from Virginia to Texas. Except for those in Texas, all were discharged in August 1865. Although not listed by Caldwell (1880) as being one of those recruited, Jacob K. Wilhelm apparently enlisted with this group. He enlisted 26 February 1864 and was assigned to the Department of Tennessee where he apparently served under a Captain James Spencer In the fall of 1864, he contracted chronic diarrhea (colitis ?) from "exposure and hard service" (apparently during Sherman's march into Georgia. He was in a hospital in Kingston, Ga. for one week, and was hospitalized in Hospital #2 at Chattanooga, TN (Pension Records).
Jacob K. Wilhelm was discharged 25 August 1865 at Nashville, TN. Following that time, he lived in Davidson, Williamson, Dyer, Humphrey, and Benton Counties in Tennessee. He was reportedly married while living in Dyer County. He divorced a Lucinda in Benton Co. TN. on 1, Oct. 1873. On 23 April 1874, He Married Martha Jane Aden in Carroll County, TN. Their children are listed below. On 14 August 1879, he applied for an invalid pension based upon the above illness. At that time, he lived 8 miles from Camden, TN. He died 31 October 1886 at Holladay, TN. His wife survived until 31 July 1932. He must have Lucinda in the hospital while being treated there and married while still in the hospital. They had four children then they divorced. She went to ALA. And he married Martha Jane Aden with in six months. 11 Pages on the divorce.
