Eritrea is located in Eastern Africa and bordering the Red Sea, between Djbouti and Sudan. The total land area is 121,320 km. Eritrea's climate is hot and dry along the Red Sea coast, cooler and wetter in the central highlands (There are up to 61 cm of rainfall annually), semiarid in western hills and lowlands; rainfall heaviest during June-September, except in the coastal desert. The population of Eritrea was estimated at 4,135,933 in July of 2000.

Ethnic groups are: Tigrinya 50%, Tigre and Kunama 40%, Afar 4%, and Saho 3%. Religions are: Muslim, Coptic Christian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant.

National Day, May 24, which celebrates the 1993 Independence from Ethiopia, is the national holiday of Eritrea.
