Celtic Crosses

Scotland/ Ireland

Design your own edible Celtic Cross. A 'simple' activity for Brownies and Rainbows that can be made more 'tricky' for Guides and Senior Section by making more complex designs (being artistic helps!).

Equipment

  • Sheets of rice paper
  • Icing sugar and food colouring and/or tubes of writing icing
  • Water
  • Bowls to mix icing in
  • Spoons to mix icing with
  • Jewel-like sweets e.g. jelly diamonds and milky way stars
  • Knives with serrated edges and/or scissors
  • Templates or pictures of celtic cross designs
  • Plastic food bags (optional - for piping icing)
  • Liquorice laces (optional)

Safety Notes

  • Do not use craft scissors if the girls are planning to eat their crosses.

Instructions

  1. Mix up the icing. A thick consistency is best, especially if you intend piping the icing. (approximately 6 heaped tbsp of icing sugar to 1 tbsp of water)
  2. If you intend piping the icing, place it in a plastic food bag and cut a small hole from one corner.
  3. Use the icing to draw or pipe a cross shape/design on to the rice paper. You can either create your own or trace over a design (they show up well through the rice paper).
  4. Use the icing to 'glue' jewels (sweets) on to your cross.
  5. (optional) Make a small hole in the top of the cross and thread it onto a liquorice lace. Younger girls love these edible necklaces!
