Well Dressing

England

Well dressing is a tradition from the North of England, where wells are decorated with petals pushed into clay.
This is well dressing with a twist and will be enjoyed by all sections. Well dressing is a social and community activity which involves the whole village. It is much more fun for the whole unit (or patrols/sixes) to work together on a large well dressing, than for girls to make individual ones.

Equipment

  • Finger Paints
  • Large sheet of paper
  • Pencil
  • Aprons
  • Plastic Sheeting!

Safety Notes

  • Make sure the paint is water-based, and especially with younger sections, make sure it is non-toxic!
  • If you are using ordinary poster paint, add a little washing up liquid to it, and it will be much easier to wash off.

Instructions

  1. Draw the outline of your well dressing design on the paper in pencil. Mark on which colours go where. (Older sections can make their own designs.)
  2. Get going with the finger paints! Try and use the lighter colours first and start from the middle so the girls don't have to lean over the wet paint. Remember a well dressing is made up of individual petals, so fingerprints do not have to join up or overlap. If small areas of the background show through it will add to the well dressing effect.
  3. Let it dry and clear up the mess!
