Postcard # 18 from the Sovereign Royal Wedding Series
Not surprisingly when you remember that Lady Diana had been a nursery school teacher, children also played an important part in the wedding. Four of the five bridesmaids were young girls ranging in age from 5 to 13, and there were two page boys that were 7 and 8 years old.
Children throughout England also made drawings showing the wedding for competitions , and they also submitted designs that were featured on some of the commemorative china. Diana, the Fairytale Princess was an account of Diana's life and the wedding that was written and illustrated by 12-year-old Lucy Butler. The narrative was written as though it was a fairy tale.
Royal wedding commemoratives aimed at children included two sets of Royal Wedding paper dolls, A Royal Romance and Royal Wedding. There were several jigsaw puzzles, including one of the entire family on the wedding day, one of the couple alone and three or four different shots from the engagement pictures. Ladybird Books issued Royal Wedding, which must have been a big seller since it is one of the most easily obtained children's books about the wedding. The Corgi company produced miniature cars and buses with the couple's initials on them. Dolls showing Princess Diana in her wedding gown were not issued until the year following the wedding.
