Him and the Head Blue Meanie

It's fairly common knowledge that Craig McCracken's main inspiration for Him was the Head Blue Meanie from the Beatles' Classic "Yellow Submarine". Since I'm a fan of BOTH Yellow Sub and the PpG, I decided to make a little section in my Him shrine talking about Him's role model (if you will), how they're alike, and how they're different.

1. Appearance

Well, on the outside they don't really look too much alike. The HBM is, of course, blue, and Him is most decidedly red. The HBM seems to have a cotton ball for a body, making him appear most huggable, while Him is more along the lines of angular and skinny. But wait! What's this pink fluffy stuff around Him's waist and neck? It DOES look rather huggable, doesn't it? Match number one! Next... The HBM has long squiggly ears while Him's are rounded, pointy and decidedly elfin. The HBM has big red lips, while Him's lips are more like black lines around his mouth. Him has long, skinny arms with 2 "fingered" claws at the end, while the HBM has, apparently, no arms and just hands with 6 fingers.  Him has apparently no neck, or at least it's covered up with fluffy stuff... but wait! The HBM also has either no neck, or it's covered in fluffy stuff! Match 2! Also, both appear to be wearing thigh-high hooker boots! Match 3! The HBM's head seems smaller than his bodily proportions would suggest, while Him's seems bigger. A semi-match, maybe? I think we're quite done with appearance now.

2. Sound

Both the HBM and Him have two very different voices- a higher pitched, female sounding one and a lower pitched, more male sounding one.  However, this difference is much more pronounced in Him.  Him's voice also has a (BvsH: looooooovely... oh, sorry...) echoing quality that's missing in the HBM's voice.

3. Mannerisms

Both the HBM and Him are most decidedly Very Evil. However, they tend to act in different ways. Him tends to stay cool, calm, and under control while the HBM is somewhat prone to fits and temper tantrums. The HBM does a lot of screaming throughout the movie, while Him yells only very rarely, and only at no one in particular. However, both seem to command others around quite easily (in Telephonies, the other villains call Him "sir".).

4. Methods

This is perhaps where the two villains are the most similar. Specifially, the episode "Tough Love" is a lot like the movie "Yellow Submarine". In Tough Love, Him takes the love for the Powerpuff Girls that all the Townsvillers have and tuuuuuuuurns (hehe...sorry) it into hate.  In Yellow Submarine, the HBM is determined to drive out all the love, happiness, and especially music from Pepperland. So, really, the plots are quite similar.  However, where the HBM goes about his plot with an army of assorted blue people (and a Glovey-dove...hehehe), Him has he, himself, and... him.  While Him certainly possesses several powers of his own, the HBM is relying on his army of Blueness.  In short, the HBM has lots of henchmen while Him prefers to work solo.

That's the end! If anyone hasn't seen Yellow Submarine yet, I highly recommend it! It's a bit... ah... trippy, but definitely fun for the Beatles fan, and especially for anyone who loves Him.
