Black Thought of The Roots
The Roots....slept on because they don't spit about being pimps or playas, gangstas or hustlas. They're not like most of these flashy, ice wearin so called "rappers" of today. Their rhymes actually have meaning and substance. There's more to life then going to the club, "buying out the bar" and taking chicks/guys home. Don't get me wrong that's cool and there ain't nothin wrong with going to the club but it gets tired way rappers about all the damn time. All you need to become a rapper these days is a hot beat, a catchy hook, and shallow lyrics. Boom! Record deal - video.

OK OK lemme stop hatin. This is about the Roots so here we go.

Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson. Ben Kenney, Leonard Hubbard, Scratch, and Kamal Gray are the Roots. They formed their band in 1987 in Philadelphia's High School for the Creative Performing Arts. Tariq and Ahmir became friends. Ahmir loved the drums and Tariq loved rapping so he did, over Ahmir's drum beats. The two of them together released an independant album in 1993 entitled "Organix". The record label, Geffen liked what they heard and signed them. In 1995 they released "Do You Want More!!??!".

Since they did shows with the Beastie Boys and did Lollapalooza they were getting alterative music credits. But as time went hip hop heads everywhere were giving them more and more attention. They even played for Jay-z's MTV Unplugged. Isn't it ironic?

The Roots shined at the 1999 Grammy Awards for their song " You Got Me" off their "All Things Fall Apart" album featuring Erykah Badu.

They have done some behind the scenes stuff like working with artists: Erykah Badu, Bilal, Common and Jill Scoot. They also co-wrote four songs on D'Angelo's "Voodoo" album.

Check out their new album in stores.
